I lifted the chassis enough to remove all the foam, so the flange would sit hard on the worktop. The cover then sat nicely flush on the worktop. I tightened the clamps, removed the cover and ran a small bead of silicone along the edge of the flange, then wiped most of it away. So there's a small wedge of silicone sealing the flange to the worktop but nothing that would prevent the hob being removed. Even if the silicone did offer some resistance, you would probably then remove the top cover to see what the problem was and run a knife around the flange. The sealer is designed to repel oil and water, which can lead to extensive damage in the grout over time. In places where moisture is common, such as the kitchen or bathroom, this type of protection can reduce the amount of maintenance your grout and tiles will need after extensive use.
