About this deal

I’m most of the way through the second book now, so I’m planning to do another comparison when I’ve finished that.

If Only They Could Talk: The Classic Memoir of a 1930s Vet

As long as I can remember , I always wanted to be a vet till I was around 17 when I found out , I wasn't doing too well with seeing the insides of animals. Many years later my vet needed some urgent assistance during a surgery on one of my dogs and I had no problem with seeing what I saw so maybe I missed my calling after all. When I was a child, I used to be fascinated by distant and remote places. I loved the idea of travelling to different lands. Islands, in particular, used to appeal to me. Easter Island, in the South Pacific, was one of the places I wanted to visit. It was almost too small to see in my atlas and it’s 1,300 miles from any other land. How did people get there originally? Where did they come from? What did they eat and drink on the long journey across the sea? They must have been exceptional people. And, when you see the statues that these people built on Easter Island, these people seem even more amazing. From the author whose books inspired the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small, this first volume of unforgettable memoirs chronicles James Herriot’s first years as a country vet, with the signature storytelling magic that has made him a favourite the world over. The antics of 24 year-old Glaswegian James Herriot, getting used to the ropes as a veterinary assistant in 1930s Yorkshire. Nothing on the masterpiece of words, the thought out plot, the detail that Orwell describes extensively, not even mentioning the main characters. Or the ending....On a winter night last June, José Antonio Tuki, a 30-year-old artist on Easter Island, did one of the things he loves best: he left his house on the southwest coast and hiked north across the island to Anakena beach. Tuki sat on the sand and gazed at the colossal human statues – the moai. The statues range from four to 33 feet and some weigh more than 80 tons. They were carved long ago with stone tools and then transported up to 11 miles to massive stone platforms. As Tuki stares at their faces, he feels a connection. ‘It’s something strange and energetic,’ he says. ‘This is something produced from my culture, the Rapanui.’ He shakes his head. ‘How did they do it?’ Siegfried remarks that he doesn’t understand why people keep pets (while surrounded by dogs). He has Tristan send ointment for Cranford’s boar and a faeces sample by post. Tristan mixes the parcels up. Fresh out of Veterinary College, and shoulder-deep in an uncooperative cow, James Herriot’s first job is not panning out exactly as expected . . . To be honest, I was quite disappointed by this book. He talks way too much (in my opinion) about the weather, the ongoing discussions between his boss and his brother, their secretary and the animal owners instead of going into more details about treating the animals and the animals themselves, it's all quite superficial to me. I even struggled to finish this book. urn:lcp:ifonlytheycouldt0000holl:epub:cfdd314a-b457-4387-9c3a-f4db6d39b7d7 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier ifonlytheycouldt0000holl Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2j77ht7q Invoice 1652 Isbn 1855927101

Remote and distant places have always been fascinating to me since I was a child. Of course, what’s ‘remote’ to me in the UK isn’t necessarily remote to other people, but Easter Island, in the South Pacific, is a place that fits any definition of the word. It’s 1,300 miles from any other land – so how did people manage to get there originally? OK, they probably went by canoe – but imagine that journey across the open ocean. How did they organise food and drink, for a start? But you only need to look at the statues they built once they got to Easter Island and it’s clear that these were exceptional people. I didn’t realise how many differences there were between the books and the TV series, especially with Helen not appearing in the book at all. Interesting process on how the production team adapted the books into the TV series, especially regarding the inclusion of Helen early on in the series. Siegfried argues with Tristan for arriving at 4 am. Mr. James and Tristan were getting ready to go to a village party; moreover Siegfried said that Tristan must go to see a case of a pig’s ear that was infected. It couldn’t wait longer. Tristan was wearing his best clothes and he had to attend his brother’s command.

Suka dengan penggambaran alam pedesaan dan orang-orangnya serta uniknya duo Farnon yang kadang bikin terpingkal-pingkal sendiri. In the series, Siegfried tells James that the horse is “a colt”. The “colt” drags Siegfried across a field. James treats the Bellerbys’ cow and waits while they have Sunday lunch before giving them a lift into Darrowby to see Handel’s Messiah.

This had me guffawing with laughter in places. Such a warm and cosy read too - in spite of the often harsh life being described (it was freezing up on the Yorkshire moors in winter).
