About this deal

The top plate buttons are large and easy to use (Image credit: Olympus) Olympus Tough TG-6 review: performance The OM System Tough TG-7 features an improved grip, a USB-C connector, an improved LCD screen, interval and time-lapse modes, support for vertical video shooting, support for the RM-WR1 weatherproof wireless remote and updated scene modes. I've seen people use a light to make up for the ISO issues deeper in the water and images look really nice. OPPO's mid-range smartphone aims to provide a sophisticated camera system at an attractive price. Andy Westlake sees how it measures up.

You said "cell phone", which means smartphone, not simple cell phone, and iPhones are a big part of the smartphone market, whether you like it or not. As much as I like that camera line (I've had both the TG1 and TG4) its lens and sensor is nearing the end of the line. The Olympus Tough TG-6 boasts an attractive mix of sporty and industrial design courtesy of visible faceplate screws, which should appeal to photographers and action junkies wanting the best of both those worlds.Simplicity –In an age where we’re constantly demanding more from our tech, the TG-6 revels in its set-and-forget mentality. The options are there if you need them, but you can easily get away with choosing a single mode and snapping until your heart’s content.

One of the main reasons that the Olympus TG-5 topped our list of the best waterproof cameras was its impressive array of features for a tough cam. Do you want an optical zoom? If yes, then the answer is emphatically: The Olympus is vastly more practical and has better IQ. There have been several references to smartphones throughout this review, and to be clear, the TG-6 isn't meant to replace one. Rather, it's designed to withstand exactly what you don't want happening to your smartphone: being dropped, stepped on, or dunked in water. The Olympus Tough TG-6's macro and Microscope modes are brilliant to use Olympus Tough TG-6: key specs For using the flash or LED light in Microscope Control, press the [ OK] button to display the Live Control and select the flash setting with the arrow pad Up and Down button. The TG-6 is known for its aggressive anti-noise filters. You can see them in action here. (No sharpening or noise reduction was applied in post-processing.) If you're looking for an outdoor camera that can go in the sea, get covered in sand, be dropped onto concrete, and still take pictures and video even in freezing temperatures, this is the best everything-proof camera out there. The zoom lens in use here sports a 35mm equivalent range of a modest 25-100mm, with an impressive f/2 maximum aperture at the wide end, dropping down to a less impressive f/4.9 at maximum telephoto. Nevertheless, we do get a TruePic VIII processor, as found in Olympus’s OM-D E-M1 Mark II, and the Olympus Tough TG-6 can capture 4K video at 30fps, or shoot Full HD clips at high speed 120fps. Having a camera that can get wet means you can get into the splash zone. Don’t photograph puddle-jumping-kids from a distance; get close and get wet! If it hasn’t happened yet, the day will come when you lose your drive and inspiration as a photographer.

The TG-6 is a bit of an outlier in that Olympus continues to use a 12 Megapixel sensor, rather than the 16 or 20 Megapixel sensors found on its competitors. On a chip this small, the TG-6’s lower pixel count might help its performance at higher ISOs, but the much bigger benefit is its lens’ ability to go to F2.0 at its widest-angle setting, letting in twice as much light as its closest rivals will. And, for most purposes, a 12 Megapixel sensor is more than enough. Of course, the reason this list of specs is so exciting is because of what they’ll let you do with this camera as a photographer.

The irony is that I had an underwater case for my x100s. But it’s so clumsy to use in the case that it hinders my photography. At the end of his review Jeff Kellers conclusion is "Not good for those who want smartphone IQ or better...", completely agree. There is no full-manual mode on this camera. But if you know what you’re doing, you can still take full control. You can now use the TG6’s microscope mode in, as well as out of the water. Here I’m actually quite close to the anemone and only zoomed in a fraction but, as you can see it’s reproduced much larger than life size. The Olympus Tough TG-6 is a well-designed rugged camera with a broad feature set, good image quality for its class and a host of environment sensors that store everything from location to temperature in your photos.
