A detective herself with Berlin CID, she has flown to Australia - desperate to find her sister. The start of this one is a little slow, I found, but mostly in a setting the scene kind of way. Obviously too, we as readers know more than Lucas does (on account of the number of POVs this book gets), so I was sat waiting for Lucas to get with it, while having more knowledge than he did. Not necessarily a good thing for a detective novel, although it did work in raising tension towards the end. I liked the fact there are basically two threads to this story. I enjoyed guessing how the stories converge. Dual plots can be hit and miss, but in this case I thought it worked really well, also it ensures that ‘all important’ suspense and tension never waivers. Paradise is an evocative novel that excels in its characterisations and depictions of the seedier and violent side of the Gold Coast. Highly recommend. Nail-biting thriller! ... Outback (DS Walker Thriller, book 1) by Patricia Wolf
Lucas Walker of the AFP is still recuperating from the injuries sustained during his last case in his hometown of Caloodie and is awaiting the results of a review board of his actions. He's been sent to Surfer's Paradise by his superiors to work on a murder case - the victim was someone walker knows from the Caloodie case. While they he assists the local police on a home invasion and murder - Siobahn Owen was brutally murdered by burglars who had tied up and tortured her husband, their daughter was almost smothered to death as well. Lucas becomes invested in the case as he takes shift at the hospital to protect the daughter, Gabby. Paradise is recommended to those that enjoy police procedurals with humanly developed characters and the novels of writers like Garry Disher. Paradise was provided by Embala Books through Netgalley upon the promise of a fair review and is set to be published on May 17, 2023. With multiple new and previously introduced characters, Wolf then delivers a satisfying, way above-average police procedural full of interesting characters and plots and does well in breathing life into her characters – even the villains. Not only that, Wolf’s writing again exhibits a wonderfully smooth style that clearly feeds the anticipation of the arrival of her future work.He still has a lot of resentment against Walker who destroyed one of his most profitable criminal enterprises. In the meantime, Walker finds himself working on a major investigation into a home invasion on Macintosh Island that turned out fatal. But it looks like trouble has followed him with the Vandal bike gang moving their drug operation to the sunny Gold Coast. Meanwhile, Lucas has also been drawn into the case of murdered mum Siobhan Owen who was left brutally murdered and her young daughter left in a coma after a home invasion. Barbara was a peripheral character here, I didn't realize how much I missed her until she was just some infrequent text messages, and I hope she'll make it into the next book in a more substantial way. As the novel progresses, the more information Walker discovers, the more suspicions he has that the two cases may be related, while others remain highly skeptical of such a link. They had disappeared in the neighborhood while heading to a remote cattle station where they had been offered jobs. Initially, Walker doubts that his supervisor is only interested in him helping with an investigation into a missing persons case.

At some point, she worked for “Monocle” magazine as a correspondent from Lisbon and for the Independent as a design columnist, The plot is intense in Paradise and revolves around bikkie gangs, drugs and greed! Another gripping read and I also rated Paradise as a 5-star read.

Slowly, Walker becomes more deeply involved in each case and because it is believed Gabby may still be in danger, he takes turns guarding her at her hospital bedside while recovering from injuries sustained in the home invasion. This then leads to the development of kinship between the two.
