About this deal

So I tried to end it. I won’t go into detail as I don’t think it’s fair on my mum, but thank God I was unsuccessful.” During his book talk, An Evening With Rylan Clark, at London’s Royal Festival Hall last week, an audience member told the presenter: ‘You really deserve to be happy and I hope you’re not going to give up on [love].’

The TV presenter split from his husband last year after six years of marriage, and has been open about the toll it took on him, recently admitting that he suffered two heart failures and was hospitalised following the breakdown of his marriage. Comic Relief star Rylan Clark once made a heartbreaking confession about being hospitalised twice following his marriage breakdown in 2021. What’s the point?’ I thought. I’d lost what I thought was everything, the one thing I always wanted. A man I loved. A family of my own. And now it was gone.He revealed in his book that he was ‘unfaithful’ to his ex, Dan Neal, which resulted in his mental health deteriorating. My mum and sister-in-law were acting really weird and I didn’t know why. Next thing, Eamonn and Ruth turned up and I just broke down.” He has obviously gone through a hard time separating from his husband, although it sounds like he is better off without him in his life, and I hope he finds the happiness he deserves!

On Radio 4 and Sounds, Rylan has a new show, Rylan: How to Be a Man. He’s interesting, Rylan: a naturally gifted presenter (he was a great host of the recent Audio and Radio Industry awards), he has, in the past, not always been stretched by his broadcasting choices. Ry-Union, a 2021-22 podcast in which he chatted to reality show celebs, was pretty weak. On this new show he’s better produced (though the Zoom call sound isn’t great), with a proper theme and set of questions. The topic is men and masculinity. And Rylan does well, though many of his interviewees seem prepped: they all say it’s OK for men to cry; that asking for help when you feel down is not, of itself, un-masculine. Such insights can seem basic, and the first interview, with wildlife cameraman/TV presenter Hamza Yassin, was a little dull. Still, I very much enjoyed ex-boxer Amir Khan and, to my great surprise, model David Gandy, who talked well about being one of the few male models known by name. The chapter on his breakdown was quite hard to read, so I it was definitely good to just do one chapter that was dark, then talk about happier parts. Possibly cathartic for Ross/Rylan to have written it is difficult to read at times but I don't doubt it was far harder to have lived through. Rylan, 33, previously opened up about his ill health last year following the breakdown of his marriage. There will be stuff that you know [Alex Jones] that isn't in the book but it's my book and this is my responsibility and it's on me.

Although his breakdown, or whatever is the best way to describe it, is mentioned throughout the book , he only dedicates one chapter to talk about it in detail, whereas the rest of the book he spoke about other parts of his life. We got a bit of juicy gossip but not as much as I hoped, but I understand Rylan had a previous book where maybe he exposed more secrets of his time in the house? I can’t say from this I am keen to read part 2 of Rylan’s life , but it was an enjoyable enough light read (listen). I finished it with a newfound respect for him, and I thoroughly enjoyed the insight into his life and the entertainment industry. His new memoir, Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future, includes details about his marriage breakdown and split. Really really enjoyed this book. I mean what’s not to like…it’s Rylan ! He was my bedtime pleasure and kept me awake as he lay next to me garrulously chatting away about his life. I didn’t want to put him down.

When Rylan was first on The X Factor I thought he was attention seeking and annoying, but seeing the real side of him in recent years I have grown to like him, so was interested to read his side. If you aren’t a fan of Rylan I’m taking a guess you’ll hate this. If you like him you’ll find it interesting Ten is Rylan's memoir of the decade that changed his life and is ten years of him gracing our TV screens. Throughout the memoir Rylan gives us a warts and all account of his career in television, his divorce, the love he has for his family, especially mum Lynda and his favourite things. At the end of each chapter Rylan gives us his lessons learnt and throughout the book there are letters from some of his favourite people, family, friends and celebrities. It was quite refreshing to read an autobiography that was so blunt and raw. Being diagnosed with GAD, I know how difficult it must have been to write such an honest book following his (fairly) recent breakdown. Speaking about the split at the time, Rylan said: “I have made a number of mistakes which I deeply regret and have inevitably led to the breakdown of our marriage.” He’s unashamedly honest about his desire to be famous and this talks a lot about his marriage break up and the people around him. He is very sweary 🤣
