About this deal

I am just as surprised as many of you reading this to report that yes, the Leica Vario-Elmarti-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens does actually perform better on Leica cameras than other L-mount lens options do. While we will delve deeper into the differences between this lens and the Sigma at a later date, this fact alone may be enough to prove it’s not simply “rehoused.”

From our tests, it is clear Sigma prioritized sharpness across the frame (that is, the image field) at each focal length and aperture over outright sharpness, something that we’re seeing more frequently with modern designs. Still, we were expecting a greater increase in sharpness over the previous model. The Sony option, without the need for an adapter, would be expected to perform better from AF and frame rate perspectives. All SIGMA lenses come with a 4-Year Warranty in the US, but only if you buy from SIGMA America directly or a SIGMA Authorized Dealer. Gray market importers undercut legitimate retailers, deceive well-intentioned customers, and sell products that are ultimately not eligible for warranty service. Make sure you are buying from a trusted source so your lens is covered! The Tokina has about .5 stops less peripheral shading at f/2.8, though stopping down largely eliminates this difference.

Intro

While I don't see the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens delivering image quality that is going to clearly make it every photographer's must-have lens, it competes well in most regards and is a contender for this most important lens slot. While OS does not stop subject motion blur, sometimes OS can be used to intentionally capture motion blur. I did not have a tripod with me on this hike and wanted to use an f/8 aperture for optimal depth of field. What really matters is Sigma's new 24-70mm Art E-mount lens really delivers the goods and is terrific value at the price. The graph below shows the chromatic aberration values at the three models’ widest focal lengths and widest apertures. All three exhibit lateral chromatic aberration of greater than 10 microns from around the 80% mark from the center of the image.

The Sigma Art series 24-70mm f/2.8 lens’s overall score of 31 on the Nikon D810 puts it 5 points behind the maker’s 24-35mm f/2, which is a noticeable margin. We expected the new lens to be closer. The lens remains stunningly sharp even wide-open at f/2.8, especially in the central region of the frame, although vignetting is clear to see when uncorrected, as in this shot taken at a focal length of about 35mm (Image credit: Future) Lab data Both lenses offer excellent image quality. The Sigma is slightly better at the wide end, and the Tamron might edge out the Sigma at the telephoto end, though they are close in both cases. If you’re shooting with a camera in the 24 megapixel range (or less), you probably won’t see a difference at all in resolution. After reviewing the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 OS ART for Canon mount, I didn’t have particularly high hopes for the new Sigma 24-70 model for mirrorless, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover how well the new lens performed.
