This was an engrossing, good-quality horror novel. I believe this was the third or fourth novel I have read by Ania Ahlborn and as with the previous reads this did not disappoint but unfortunately had a few issues which led me to only give this three stars. There was a lot of drama. So much drama. So many whispered conversations and half conversations that started but never went anywhere; the kind where one of the characters would blurt out something and then stop awkwardly with their thought unfinished only for the other to huskily go, “I know.” Stolen Tongues started life as a story on Reddit (which is why the main character’s name also happens to be the author’s name) before being self-published and gaining traction through word of mouth. Like The Shuddering, the story is set in a remote cabin on a mountain, but this one is of the more rustic variety. Faye and Felix are having a quiet break away from their hectic lives to celebrate their engagement when Faye begins speaking in her sleep—only it doesn’t sound like incoherent dream ramblings. Instead, it sounds like she’s having an actual conversation. The main temple feels like a big gothic cathedral, at least in the public areas. The Zessin temple reminds me of the temples from Sharon Shinn's Elemental Blessings series. I was a fan of Ahlborn’s work prior to this, but this definitely seals the deal. I will read anything she writes!
