About this deal

Recently, I felt inspired to go for it. I was itching to get into a dark and high-stakes YA-Dystopian world. After an apocalyptic war, the once luxurious cruise ship the Arcadia is now a refugee ship. For forty years the residents of this ship have been prevented from reaching land. The ship floats near the Federal States, what used to be part of the U.S. Esther follows the rules and is working hard. Nik goes against authority and is planning something big. When the two meet things will never be the same. Buy from our bookstore and 25% of the cover price will be given to a school of your choice to buy more books. *15% of eBooks. Home >

The Stranded by Sarah Daniels | Waterstones

The Arcadia used to be a luxury cruise ship. But for 40 years it's been the home of refugees who aren't allowed to step onto the mainland. The POV alternates in this story between a girl struggling for the life she dreams of, a rebel and the villainous captain of the ship. Normally I really don't like POV changes, but for this story it works well. It adds dimension to the plot and expands the characters, rather than creating confusion. The story is of a people who had been stranded on a cruise ship forty years before and not allowed to disembark due to a horrible virus. People lived, had children, died, fought, loved all on this ship. Daniels crafts an invigorating microcosm of society aboard the Arcadia via a protagonist whose ever-expanding worldview imbues this cinematic-feeling thriller with suspense and intrigue.' ― Publisher's Weekly This dystopic techno-thriller for young adults is part one of a duology and I am looking forward to finding out the fates of the Arcadia and her inhabitants in the final instalment. The Stranded was a fun dystopian book to jump into. Now I've never been on a cruise ship before, or any boat really, so I have absolutely no idea how I would feel if I was trapped on one for years. Years people. Forty years to be exact but still, I have no idea what I would do if I was in that situation. So, it was definitely interesting to see what everyone would be like and how they would possibly escape. Not only that, there is a new villain in town. With the fall of Commander Hadley, it's left to the ruthless Admiral Janek to deal with the traitors, and her own past is beginning to catch-up with her.

Throughout the book, we get a fair amount of action which left me on the edge of my seat at times. There was definitely plenty of tension to go around as well. Whether it was between the soldiers and the rebels or with something else going on. All I really wanted to know is if Esther and Nik would make it off the ship or not. Seriously, it was constantly on my mind. There is a rebellion. I was totally engrossed in the lives of the main characters. There are good guys, bad guys, in between guys, really bad guys and non stop action, adventure, fear, and suspense. Truly, when I am yelling while reading a book, you know I was drawn into it. I am really excited to be part of the Ultimate Blog Tour with The Write Reads for The Stranded and The Exiled by Sarah Daniels. My post is a little late due to end of the academic year, (sorry Dave) however, I read this book in 2 days last week and I loved every second of it. I have bought The Exiled with me on holiday as it’s sea themed. But enough about me, here is a little more about the book and my review. The Stranded (Stranded, #1) by Sarah Daniels Not so much a spoiler: It IS awesome. We have three alternating POVs: Sixteen year old Nik who is trying to help cause a rebellion: A act to liberate the Arcadia. Also sixteen year old Esther who is trying to just study and be a doctor. She gets dragged into the rebellion. And of course we have a POV of a baddie: Hadley. Boo! The storyline kept me interested and I mostly liked the characters. I did love that all the characters were able to show different aspects of their personalities. The only one I didn't enjoy was Hadley because he was just all bad. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.Welcome to the Arcadia. Once a luxurious cruise ship, now it is home to the stranded. For forty years, they have lived, and died, on the water. A place of extreme haves and have-nots, gangs and make-shift shelters, its people are tyrannized by a country they can see but can't get to. I also enjoyed the beginning of the chapters which told how many days on ship, etc. I thought that was very nicely done.

What a fantastic debut! This is YA dystopia at it's best. There's a fantastic yet claustrophobic setting; switching POVs that, at this point at least, aren't love interests along with the villain in 3rd person; a snappy and fast moving storyline and a host of strong characters. I wanted to like this but it was so boring. Maybe it was the writing style but I couldn’t get into the story at all.

Retailers:

I don't want to beat a dead horse with this review, too late, some of you may be thinking, nevertheless I shall bow out gracefully here... As always, please take my opinion with a grain of salt. I am by no means an expert on all things YA Dystopian novels. Daniels crafts an invigorating microcosm of society aboard the Arcadia via a protagonist whose ever-expanding worldview imbues this cinematic-feeling thriller with suspense and intrigue. Welcome to the Arcadia.Once a luxurious cruise ship, now it is home to the stranded. One of the things I tend to enjoy about Dystopians are that, sometimes, if done well, you can see glimmers of your society in them. You think to yourself, this is creepy because this could happen. I never felt that with this, because I didn't feel like I really knew anything about the world, or what led them to be in the current state. For forty years, people have lived aboard a former cruise ship called the Arcadia. The results of a virus and a war meant that no one wanted to take responsibility for the passengers, so they have made a society for themselves. Esther is loyal to the powers-that-be, at sixteen she is a promising medical cadet vying for a place in a medical school on land. Nik is another young adult but has a different mission. He rebels against the status quo and is determined to escape what he considers prison. Hadley is in charge of keeping the residents in line, using drones and a cadre of soldiers. Snowpiercer meets The Hunger Games in a gripping near-future dystopian: romances, betrayals, and fights for freedom in a world turned upside-down... Esther is a loyal citizen, working flat-out for a rare chance to live a life on land. Nik is a rebel, intent on liberating the Arcadia once and for all. This is honestly one of the best action centred books I've read in a while! Think Titanic meets The Hunger Games !.'
