About this deal

Appreciate the comment Daniel and the time you took to write it. To clarify I do think community content programs absent the no devritive clause are a good third way for company to share their iP. It is more controlled environment then the use of OGL SRD.

ZWEIHÄNDER RPG - Andrews McMeel Publishing

Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: Generally averted. Magic powers don't grow in potency and the spells you get are about in line with the average damage output of most other classes at the same experience amount. And while warriors may be limited to 'hit stuff with sword' as opposed to 'call down lightning from the heavens', 'hit stuff with sword' won't end up with the warrior causing accidental self-sterilization, permanent insanity, strange weather phenomena, witch-signs, repeat offender of curdling the party ale, summoning demons, and being treated to a rousing game of Burn the Witch! by the party priest of Sig... um, the God-Emperor... and/or anyone else within earshot. If players can embrace this – along with the fairly solid chance that their current character gets decapitated within the week – the unexpected combinations the dice throw up can lead to some truly special roleplaying moments. However, a sizable slice of the roleplaying population is going to struggle to enjoy playing a character that simply doesn’t appeal to them at first glance. Celebrated as Best Game and Product of the Year at Gen Con, ZWEIHÄNDER RPG is a dark fantasy tabletop role-playing game. Using an intuitive D100 system and modern design principles, it’s easy for Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop RPG fans to learn and play. ZWEIHÄNDER also offers enough crunch to satisfy veteran gamers, making a dynamic alternative to craft your own dark fantasy campaigns. Using its unique profession-based system, you'll create grim & perilous characters unlike anything you've ever experienced before. ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer and grittier version of classic tabletop role-playing games you may already familiar with. The community calls this style of gaming the pathetic aesthetic, but we simply call it grim & perilous gaming.

The argument that Daniel make is disingenuous, the debate isn't what rule system is to be considered part of the OSR, the debate is whether open content is to be primary driver of the OSR. The no derivative works bit could be problematic and someone should probably clarify this with Pinnacle and OBS, but it sounds like they only want to keep you from using Savage Worlds IP outside of the program. My design intention: the argument whether Zweihander RPG is OSR isn’t ours to make, but our fans believe it’s an OSR game. The OSR was one of the design principles when it was written, influenced by Maelstrom and other older games that hadn’t been revived at the time. Thus, why we categorize it as OSR. Publisher: Iron Crown EnterprisesRolemaster Core Law For over four decades, Rolemaster has been the definitive fantasy role-playing game that combines realism and depth without sacrificing playability. Rolemaster Unified is the next evolution drawing upon the best elements of previous editions to create a streamlined and consistent game. Rolemaster Core Law is the cornerstone of Rolemaster […] But when it comes to CCPs focused on a system, then the no derivative clause strikes me as the publisher being overly greedy and protective. That what OBS CCP offer (commerical sales, 50% royalty) is not sufficient compensative for those rights.

Dear reader, I hope you enjoyed my article. Tabletop gaming has been a passion of mine since I was 6 years old. I've played just about every game from Dungeons and Dragons to video games like Final Fantasy. These games have inspired me, made me laugh, made me cry, and brought me endless hours of enjoyment. Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG, Player's Handbook by Daniel Fox, Andrews McMeel Publishing 2019. ISBN 9781524855444 Character creation in Zweihander is very in-depth. I mentioned the tables for randomly-generating your character, above. A few more tables I didn’t mention, already: there are random tables for your character’s height, weight, build, and social class. This sounds really cool at first, but just think about it. It’s the kind of thing that’s really neat in a video game, but details like that in a TTRPG are a bit (way too) much. The best part though? Remember how I said Zweihander involves a lot of ethics and internal struggle? It turns out there is a very specific penalty for witnessing an ally’s unexpected death. In this case, each player got 6 corruption and the equivalent of two levels of exhaustion. The more corruption you have, the higher the chance is that you get a chaos rank at the end of the session, and it peaks at 10. As for a chaos rank, well... that’s what leads to things like insanity and substance abuse. Explosive Breeder: One reason why humans and other "benign" humanoid races are in dire peril. Most of the mutant races breed at an extremely fast pace. The Grendel and Orx reach sexual maturity at age 2!! But both of these races are also very long-lived and can still be impregnating people when they're centuries old. Worse yet, the Grendel's sex powers can puppet large harems of women to stay pregnant and keep pumping out halfbreeds, while the Orx can also reproduce asexually by infesting corpses with their spores. Meanwhile the Skrazzak have their queens that can squirt out large numbers of the rat-men. To give you an idea of how hardcore game realism tends to play out with a gaming group – and what I’d do were to play an entire campaign of Zweihander – is that most in-depth rules like those mentioned above (character injuries, carrying capacity, etc.) simple get ignored. Shout-Out: Too many to count, especially in the Professions section. The official name for the Smuggler's professional trait, for example, is " Häns shot first." On an entirely different note, Zweihander has the largest collection of tables for randomly-generating character traits of any game I’ve ever seen. You can generate your gender (…why?). Randomly generate your race (pretty cool). Races have randomly generated racial traits. There are also randomly generated character names, based on race and gender (ok, also pretty cool, I suppose). On and on it goes. You can’t fathom the number of randomly generated tables in this game, which I have to say, is pretty unique.

First of all the Grim and Perilous Library is not a DM Guild program. It is a Onebookshelf Community Content program. Each program has their own license and their own body of IP that they offer. The only thing in common is that they are managed by Onebookshelf through DriveThruRPG. You calculate Degrees Of Success by adding together the tens die (a result between 1 to 10) and the relevant Primary Attribute Bonus the Skill is derived from. For example, if your Character has a Primary Attribute of 45%, your Primary Attribute Bonus is ‘4’. Whoever succeeds at their Skill Test and has the highest Degrees Of Success automatically wins the Opposed Test. This is another distinctive aspect of Zweihänder – its overwhelming love for random tables. There are tables for hit locations, injuries and magical mishaps, but nowhere is this this love more apparent than during character creation. If you follow the rules as they’re written, you’ll randomly roll up everything from your character’s starting profession to their eye colour – the impact that blind chance can have is immense. I favor a form of permission that encourages sharing with the main conditions being that the recipient must share as well. I use the OGL or a Creative Common license because I know they have been vetted by attorneys and because I find their specific conditions align with the permissions I want to give for my works.I have a more lighthearted tale for you all about my first time DMing Zweihander. For those who haven’t played it, Zweihander is an rpg focused on low fantasy and the effects a grimdark world has on its inhabitants. It has two main, constant themes throughout: the omnipotence and irreversible nature of fate, and the internal struggle of every man and woman against evil and chaos. On these two points it is brutal. Talking about a cannibal game sounds harsh. A short description of what a RPG is, so that the casual reader can make sense of the book in a library seems mandatory. But in the times of internet, anyone might find more about roleplay games rather easily. I understand that Zweihander aims to be a roleplay game where people actually roleplay. But I normally find that people select their own desired level of roleplaying, no matter how many cues a TTRPG provides. There’s also nothing wrong with players selecting their own level of roleplaying for a game they play in their free time. Included within the Starter Kit is a copy of the game’s Player’s Guide – which provides players with all the tools they need to create their characters and learn the rules – alongside the Gamemaster’s Secrets book that enables GMs for Zweihänder to plan and run one-shot adventures, which are designed to be completed in a single session, or entire campaigns. Also included is the Secrets of Swanzi adventure, a storyline written by James Introcaso – who has previously written for popular tabletop RPG series Dungeons & Dragons – that has players investigating a murder committed in a small-town. The physical edition of the starter kit includes a GM screen, a set of polyhedral dice and cards to use alongside the game. Every fortune point played then goes into the GMs pool to be used to make the characters lives miserable. I am a fan of fate points as I would rather have structured and above board cheating than under the counter cheating. Even as GM I think having fate points or fortune points is better than fudging dice rolls. Grimly Funny

Needless to say, I very opposed to this provision and view as unnecessary for any program except those that are focused on sharing setting IP like Traveller's Third Imperium or WoTC's Forgotten Realms. Greater-Scope Villain: The Abyssal Princes are the source of all the awful Chaos crap that's filtering into the Material World, but none of them are able to manifest directly into reality. Its their Mutant races and Chosen of Chaos servants that are rampaging in the world. Torches and Pitchforks: A very real threat to most adventurers. When your insanities grow too grotesque, when your mutations grow too hideous, or when the peasants find out that you have a wizard (or worse, an elf) in your party; the mob awaits!Zweihander, especially the revised edition, is tighter & laid out much better than the current WFRP 4th Edition core rulebook. The lore in Zweihander is great, which contributes to game flow. However, combat is slow. Plus, this is overall the most realistic TTRPG that I’ve ever seen. The real question is whether the realism is a positive or negative for game flow. Your personal answer to that question might just decide whether or not this game is for you and your gaming group. I am just going to refer to Zweihänder as Z from now on as I am going to use the games name so often that typing that umlaut on the a is just a pain in the arse. Zweihander is meant for low & dark fantasy campaigns. The creators state the book can be used to craft homebrew stories set in the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, George R.R. Martin, Glen Cook, Scott Lynch and other ‘grimdark’-inspired worlds - assuming you don't mind reworking things that clearly come from Games Workshop, such rolling up a rat catcher who knows about the secret ratmen of the sewers. Or you could play it exactly as written, which will give you a well-executed WFRP-clone.
