About this deal

Effective composting also requires heat, which, conveniently, is produced by the decomposing process.

It is a good idea, especially if you live in a cooler area, to look for a sunny spot in your garden, so the bin will receive heat from the sun to speed up the composting process. Apart from that, I have nothing to complain about. This setup is made from sturdy materials, you get everything you need apart from the worms and food scraps, and the price isn’t too bad at all for this kind of product. Definitely worth some consideration. It can also save you money if you live in an area of the UK with a green bin tariff! The Eco-Master composter is lightweight, easy to fit & has great top and bottom access. Features & Benefits:

If you’re feeling a little lost when it comes to choosing your very first compost bin, or just about the composting process in general, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Planting mint nearby is also a possible rat deterrent – rats and mice apparently don’t like the smell, so it is definitely worth placing a plant or two near your bin. Standard – These are affordable, low maintenance options that generally don’t come with any specific features. They are cheaper and easier to use, but will require manual aeration. With a capacity of 300 litres it falls just short of our best overall compost bin, but it’s not something that you would notice, and this bin will produce enough compost for any small to average sized property. I have one of these and have tested it extensively – it sits in the garden quite nicely, not obtrusive at all and just does it’s job: Pretty much anything else goes, as long as it is organic material. Q: How to get rid of rats in a compost bin?

A good ratio to start with, that has been proven to produce good results, is 40/60 green and brown material, put down in alternating layers. Having said that, I personally go with a ratio that is higher in carbon (brown material) as bacteria use more of it than nitrogen to create good compost. Having said that, I also tend not to be so scientific and just inspect my compost regularly to see if it needs more nitrogen or carbon adding. If there’s a strong smell, and it looks too wet, I add more brown material, if it looks too dry, I add more green stuff.

Leftover onions are also reported to keep rats away, so it is worth placing one or two of these around to repel rodents.

Although composting takes some time and effort, it’s actually an easy process. In fact, the simplest method of home composting involves starting an open pile somewhere in a far corner of your yard. The 200 litres maximum laid might not sound like a lot, and is considerably less than many of the other bins in this list, but when you’re pumping out compost so regularly in summer, you won’t find yourself wanting for something larger. If you’re strapped for space in your garden, you might be thinking that having a compost bin is out of the question, but that’s not so. With dimensions of 61cm wide, 61cm deep, and 83cm high, the 4smile compost bin is ideal for smaller gardens.

Composting waste, instead of binning it, will help to save you space in your kitchen and garden. By doing this, we reduce and recycle waste, which is better for the environment.
