About this deal

At the peak of Campbeltown’s fame, in 1851, the region was home to 29 legal distilleries plus at least 50 (and probably many more) illicit distilleries. In fact, it was the most productive whisky region in Scotland. Today, sadly, only 3 operating distilleries remain in Campbeltown – Glen Scotia, Springbank and Glengyle distileries.

Smag: Den er som navnet Hazelburn fed og fyldig med noter af mælkechokolade og tropisk frugt: mango og papaya. The answer is always the same: “I have a very good relationship with my local off-licence and all the bottles are allocated, pre-sold before the shipment arrives.”

Hazelburn - Springbank

Longrow Single Malt: Longrow is a double distilled, highly peated, smokey single malt whisky that resulted from a unique experiment by Springbank’s chairman. Springbank’s Longrow Single Malt is available in three bottlings, namely Peated, Red, and an 18-year-old. Let’s look at the positives first: Those are some clean sherry casks. No sulphur at all, which for me has been a bit of an issue over recent years with some of the sherry-dominant Springbank releases. The nose is excellent given time and a patient approach. It offers layers and an example of where the PX cask hasn’t dominated the distillate, which you rarely see nowadays. The majority of distillates (especially from new distilleries) are often brutalised by the host sherry wood. Resulting in a dram that is more sherry than whisky and samey across the industry. This bottling confirms the staunch robust nature of the Springbank distillate and on the nose it works extremely well. The Springbank Distillery is not only the oldest family owned distillery in Scotland, it also produces 3 distinct brands of whisky – Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Last month we tried their lightly peated and 2.8 times distilled brand, the Springbank 15 year old and this month for our members we have our hands on one of their non-peated brand, The Hazelburn and specifically, the Hazelburn 10 year old. A mighty fine drop of triple distilled single malt whisky – which is unusual for Scottish whiskies which are normally double distilled. Enjoy!Where things fall down somewhere are on the palate, as rather than either side dominating or stretching out to a lead, I find there’s still a tactical discussion taking place. Neither has the upper hand and instead you have a quagmire. The blast of red fruitiness we see in this wood type thankfully hasn’t come through fully, but we’re left with a spicy, oak and a somewhat insipid whisky. It needs more time in my opinion, or at least more refill. The nose does save the day to a certain degree and it’ll be interesting to put this into the final line up once all the series are available. On this basis, I’d happily wager it won’t be the best of the bunch, or even the runner-up.

Whisky - Springbank

Springbank produces three distinct variations of single malt whiskies, each created through subtle tweaking at various stages of the production process. The traditional character and style of Springbank whiskies include smoke, peach, apple, nutmeg, earth, and wet wool. Springbank’s whiskies include: Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Kilkerran 8 yo 'Cask Strength Batch 4' (57.1%, OB, Re-charred oloroso cask, 15,000 bottles, 2019) - 120821Finish: Medium in length with a continuation of the fruit theme. Lingering notes of peach pie with some sweet vanilla cream topping. There’s also some amaretto-like sweetness with a slight contrasting bitterness that adds a bit of depth. The finish tapers off with more of the spice notes from the palate. Rating: 7/10
