The players must lead their heroes to the center of the ever shifting and changing labyrinth before the Minotaur catches them! Unlike normal Lego sets, this is a board game, and not a construction kit. Having said that some construction is required before it can be played, adding to the value for money you are getting from this toy. The aim of this new range of Lego board games is for players to ‘build, play and change’. You build the game with the normal construction pieces, you play the game and then you pull it all apart and do it all again. The ‘do it all again’ part is not as repetitive as it sounds as you get to change the layout of the pieces on the ‘board’ creating a new game each time.

The centre has a raised area – this is where the Minotaur figure is at the start of the game, and where you want to get to.  The game will allow up to 4 players – each starts from a different corner – but it works fine with just 2. Use Lego to build a maze, win the race, change some rules & the layout and play again. Simple but fun. Great features to extend gameplay. Lego Minotaurus Game – What Does It Do? The board is a standard Lego board meaning you can borrow pieces from your other building sets to create more interesting mazes. You, and other players, are trying to get to the centre of the maze – the Minotaur is there to stop you. If it does, you lose a (Lego) figure, but you have three, so you have more chances. The game, like all LEGO games, is comprised entirely of LEGO pieces that you must build before you play. The rules to build the game are easy to follow and provide a fun opportunity for you and your little geeks to work together. Expect about 10 to 15 minutes to build the game from scratch. After that, only minor corrections are needed to reset the board for game set up.I stayed out of the building of the board (see above for why), but could tell that the builders of the family enjoyed this part. The concepts of the game are quite straight forward, but there’s lots of flexibility to adjust how easy it is to get through the maze. In the case of this game, the building is fairly straight forward – you are building low walls around the sides of the board, and some walls inside the board, which form the maze itself. Both of my little geeks enjoyed it and wanted to talk about it the next day and the day after that. Their desire to actually “play” the game has been trumped by their greater excitement of creating their own labyrinths and rules, however. This is actually an exceedingly fantastic turn of events and I can’t wait to play their labyrinths by their rules. By doing so, they get to be creative and I get to teach them the subtle art of “fairness” and “balance” in game design. Bonus! I’ll leave you to look up the proper story of the Minotaur– it’s not entirely child-friendly. Think instead of a maze, underground. Somewhere, in its heart, is a beast – bull on the top half, human on the bottom half.

We also appreciated the encouragement to experiment with the game, and make it our own – not many games directly invite you to do that. The Lego Minotaurus game has grown in popularity since being one of the top Christmas toys when it was new out in 2009. Despite the gloomy economic climate Lego, Europe’s biggest toymaker, is still doing well. It is probably no surprise that parents are ensuring their money is well spent on a trusted brand. You know you are getting a quality toy that is durable and will encourage creativity in your children.

Part of the cleverness of the game is that you can also move sections of the walls about – adjusting the walls of the maze slightly so that they can be jumped over, instead of having to go round them.

Having more pieces in play means that it’s easier to ‘distract’ the Minotaur – if you only have one piece, the person playing the Minotaur will logically pursue that piece only. You might also want to institute rules about moving walls – but you’ll probably be keeping to the main notion of getting all your pieces to the middle of the board. LEGO games are highly customizable. For example, the instruction manual provides several different rule variants (jumping over “hedges” by replacing the #3 with a green square) to make the game more challenging. I have even seen others create much larger labyrinths for epic play! There is even a thriving mod community for LEGO games where others can share their ideas on improving, changing, or even making a brand new game. When you get this game, you get more than what is in the box. Add to it with other LEGO pieces, make your own rules, and customize it!Overall this is a very good family game – simple enough for children to understand, entertaining enough for adults to enjoy. But if you get fed up with it, either invent your own version or simply build something else with the pieces. Lego Minotaurus Game – Are There Any Downsides? As the Minotaur, you capture another figure by moving so that your go would include going over the space that the figure is on.  When another player throws grey, they can take over being Minotaur, and move it from where it stopped on the board (rather than having to start from the centre again).

Parents will also appreciate the potential to put the lid on at the end, and know that all the Lego is in one plate (unlike most other household Lego). Now consider that, as a game, you can see into the maze from above – so you get to see which way to go.  The minotaur is there to ‘get’ you, but nothing more serious.
