Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the Encyclopedia Americana with a Wikisource reference The actual portrayals of rats vary from negative to positive with a majority in the negative and ambiguous. [65] The rat plays a villain in several mouse societies; from Brian Jacques's Redwall and Robin Jarvis's The Deptford Mice, to the roles of Disney's Professor Ratigan and Kate DiCamillo's Roscuro and Botticelli. They have often been used as a mechanism in horror; being the titular evil in stories like The Rats or H.P. Lovecraft's The Rats in the Walls [65] and in films like Willard and Ben. Another terrifying use of rats is as a method of torture, for instance in Room 101 in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four or The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe. This series is growing on me, although I have some sympathy with the police suspecting Nell since she either finds the body or is closely connected with every case so far LOL. Also, Nell seems to be in mortal danger at least once (I think three times in this book) in every book which becomes a bit repetitious. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists 16 rat species on its Red List of Threatened Species. They are considered threatened with extinction due to loss of habitat and decreasing populations.

But . . . it's not just a car, Nell,' Astrid said, her voice shaky. 'Someone's in it. You know. Dead.' All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. After getting her executive MBA from the University of Surrey and a doctorate degree from Oxford Brookes University, she began working in the corporate world. She started out as a consultant in various ecology companies and in 2015 began writing her debut novel which was then published in 2022. A big complicated event to run, some ecological work to complete, and a dead body. But that’s not all. Nell also has the added stress of meeting Rav’s parents, already predisposed to not like her because she was involved with murders recently.THE AUTHOR: After spending sixteen years as an ecologist, crawling through undergrowth and studying nocturnal habits of animals (and people), Dr Sarah Yarwood-Lovett naturally turned her mind to murder. She may have swapped badgers for bears when she emigrated from a quaint village in the South Downs to the wild mountains of the Pacific Northwest, but her books remain firmly rooted in the rolling downland she grew up in. Rats can serve as zoonotic vectors for certain pathogens and thus spread disease, such as bubonic plague, Lassa fever, leptospirosis, and Hantavirus infection. [46] Researchers studying New York City wastewater have also cited rats as the potential source of "cryptic" SARS-CoV-2 lineages, due to unknown viral RNA fragments in sewage matching mutations previously shown to make SARS-CoV-2 more adept at rodent-based transmission. [47] Having recognised an opportunity, Mark Reynolds, the owner of Reynolds Precision Engineering, is responsible for restoring Lucio Moretti’s gullwing with an electric engine, believing that if the car performs well in the event, it will generate commissions from the classic car enthusiasts who are keen to polish their eco credentials.

This is the third book in the series and despite the title being a bit daunting, it is a cozy mystery with suspects aplenty and some romance thrown in for good measure. Nell's not privy to the investigation as much, but she's a smart cookie and can see what's what. And when some tests are needed to confirm the guy drowned where it appears he did, she's willing and able to assist. Her conclusions lead her to think in a very different direction to where the police had been headed.

A Mischief of Rats is the third entry in the Nell Ward Mystery series and much better than the first book a Murder of Crows which I previously reviewed. Having not read the second book I was a bit lost in parts, but it was still good as a standalone. This time around the book had a much more cohesive feel and the prose flowed at a nice pace. Thankfully the dreaded love triangle is gone, and Nell is putting her life together after what appears to be traumatic trials, she endured in book two and starting a new life with her boyfriend Rav.Rats are mainly nocturnal and live underground. Although they vastly outnumber humans, we rarely see them. They are experts at staying out of sight! It turns out that what shed overheard was the murder of Sophie Crows a wealthy landowner. The badly mutilated body is soon found at the end of the tunnel leading to the cellars of the Manor House. Although I am not overly keen on motor racing, this was an exciting mystery and what an ending! It definitely leaves me eager for the next in the series, ‘A Generation of Vipers’, due to be published in the summer. EXCERPT: ' . . . There is one other thing. We've found another crashed car this morning. Further along the road from the collapsed wall. And well down the bank, hidden from the road. A dog walker found it.' It turns out that she has links to the dead woman which makes her a strong suspect. Desperate to clear her name, she attempts to draw on her ecological knowledge in trying to resolve Sophie’s murder.
