About this deal

A version of the popular Archer with six graphic EQ sliders instead of a tone knob, developed by guitarist Steve Stevens. Each slider controls 18dB of cut or boost at 6 different frequencies. Key to the circuit are two filter networks that amount to a clean blend. The first is controlled by the dual-gang gain control. As gain is increased, a filtered clean signal that runs in parallel is reduced in amplitude, and vice-versa. This is another reason why players running it at lower gain settings find it to be the 'cleanest' boost or drive that they've played.

Klon Centaur Klones for every budget Best Klon clones 2023: Klon Centaur Klones for every budget

A popular Klone with a toggle switch that controls the amount of headroom and character of the drive, and an extra Bass knob for added versatility. Both EQ knobs allow 15dB of boost or cut. Mk3 keeps the same tone and look but adds 18v internal voltage for extra headroom, better input protection, optimized power delivery network, reduced noise floor, and quieter true-bypass switching. Some of these are basically carbon copies of the original, both with regards to their features and design. Others have been less faithful in their recreation. The might have tried to alter or improve the Klon’s circuit in some way, or to have totally changed the design of the pedal. I play and record at home with a fairly modest range of equipment and I wanted a pedal to give me a decent grunty OD sound which was also capable of producing some nice crystal clear Gilmour-ish tones as well. I wasn't getting exactly what I was looking for with a Big Muff reissue which I bought a few months ago so a bit of due dilligence and research among the numerous recent YT vids concerning Klons and the various clones available and I was seduced the possibilities of the Nux Horseman.Electro-Harmonix Founder Mike Matthews recognised this, and so built the Soul Food as an affordable alternative for ‘starving musicians’. The Tumnus – named after ‘Mr. Tumnus’ from the fictional series The Chronicles of Narnia –is a very affordable and compact clone built to recreate the tones of the original Klon Centaur. A good cheap guitar pedal should of course, sound great which because of all the above, is now easier to find than ever. You want it to last more than a few rehearsals too! It might not last a lifetime, but you should be able to get a few years out of it. Ideally, you want it to have an easy to use interface too - this boils down to how it’s been designed. What are the benefits of buying cheap guitar pedals? Depending on how the settings of the Centaur are set, the pedal is capable of producing sounds ranging from a clean boost all the way to a fairly dirty overdrive/distortion sound – all while preserving the original tone of your guitar. So if you want beautiful blues tones, a very well built pedal and you either don’t want to replicate the design of the original Klon, or would prefer a slightly smaller pedal, this could make a great addition to your pedalboard. 2023 UPDATE: Best Klon Centaur Clones: Replicas And

Yet despite those differences, all of the pedals listed here will help you recreate tones that are very similar to those of the original Klon Centaur. The first circuit, known as the ‘Mythical’ circuit, is based on the diodes used in the original Klon Centaur. As such, it is lower gain and has a greater dynamic response. On first glance, you could be forgiven for mistaking the Ceriatone Centura for the original Klon Centaur. This arrives with all of the parts you need to build your own ‘Klone’ from scratch. Given the number of components in the Centura, it isn’t an easy build, but it could be a great project if you like tweaking and modding your own gear. The Klone pedal from RYRA is an exact, part-for-part clone of the iconic Klon Centaur. RYRA has worked hard to recreate this Klon Centaur clone using quality components and housing it all in a unique-looking enclosure.Cheap guitar pedals can be great as they allow you to try out a whole range of new sounds, without having to spend a lot of money. Times are tough, and for a lot of musicians there’s less disposable cash available. If you need a new overdrive, or you just fancy adding a new dimension to your rig, then one of the best cheap guitar pedals lets you do so without it hitting your wallet too hard. So if you are looking for the same killer Klon tones but in a more compact enclosure, the JRAD Archer could be a great choice. Either that, or I would recommend looking at the JRAD Archer IKON. The second ‘Magical’ circuit, is totally different, and produces a much more compressed and higher gain sound. The build quality and design is great. The switching options for gold/silver and turning the buffer on and off are clever, the silent switch has a very modern & solid feel to it, and the aesthetics that pay tribute to the original are a nice touch. Somewhere between the faithful Klon replicas and the tone tweaking options of the Tumnus Deluxe lies the Keeley Electronic Oxblood.

Its circuitry closely mimics the original Klon, as does its design. Of all of the pedals listed here, the Way Huge is closest in size to the JRAD Archer. If you are going to be using your Klon style pedal a lot, then I would suggest opting for one of the top-end, hand made clones. It will be made with higher quality components and is likely to be sturdier and more robust. Our number one Nux product is the following item Nux Mighty Plug Pro. An all time favourite is the following item Nux Mighty Air, of which we have sold more than 2.000 pieces up to now. In the grand scheme of things there are a LOT of pedals in the world and so many of them are clones of other pedals. If the pedal demos we linked to in the galleries above weren’t enough to sway you one way or another, there are a series of videos where the various Klon inspired pedals get compared directly through shootouts: we’ve embedded here some of them to better inform your choice.

Go Backstage

One of the newest, affordable, three-knob klones from a reliable builder. It keeps things simple, compact, and – what’s important – delivers authentic tones. You see, everyone expected this to sound “not very good” but instead it sounds extremely close to the originals. By holding down the footswitch you swap from gold to silver mode which has slightly higher gain, what a fantastic way to go about something that others have never done. Within a few years, the pedal gained legendary status, also because of the maker’s dedication to customer service, and to hand-wiring every unit that left their shop. Finnegan stopped building the original model in 2009 – at that point, he had hand-wired 5,400 of them. (You can find a more comprehensive history of the Klon here.)

There are companies out there that own huge factories that make pedals on the behalf of other brands. Some of these companies have since gone on to create their own brands and sell directly to the consumer, meaning that you can get the same pedal, perhaps with a slightly different design, for a lower cost. What is a cloned guitar pedal? To show off its flexibility, the Horseman can run in either true bypass or buffered bypass. This is a feature the original didn't offer. This meant whenever the pedal was plugged in, it would colour your tone, even when disengaged. Supporting true bypass allows the Horseman to offer deluxe drive when engaged, but not affect your signal in the slightest when disengaged. Classic tone, superior performance. Specifications In fact, Finnegan himself alluded to his own reputation with the design of the KTR, plastering the words ‘Kindly remember: The ridiculous hype that offends so many is not of my making’ across the front of the pedal. When it comes to analogue pedals, there’s not actually that much inside that can go wrong. As long as the PCB design is right, and it has been constructed properly then there’s every chance you’ll end up with a good pedal. Digital pedals are harder to get right on a budget, and they’re harder to clone, which is why our list of the best cheap guitar pedals is mostly made up of analogue models. However if there’s one pedal in the world which needs “kloning” its the Klon, because these things cost a fortune. But Nux isn’t the first and dare we say they’ll not be the last to make a Klone and a great price so what makes this any different?? This other Wampler Klon clone is an evolution of the original Tumnus (see “Authentic “Klones” list) in a bigger enclosure, with optional true bypass switch and tonal flexibility through a three-way EQ section. A toggle switch in the middle of the pedal gives you higher gain options for extra flexibility. The original Centaur took up a beastly amount of pedalboard space, and the KTR (manufactured by Klon’s inventor Bill Finnegan himself, but contracted out to make it compatible with mass production) features a smaller footprint. A toggle was added to switch between true or buffered bypass. Some say it doesn’t compare to the original, but considering it was built by Finnegan himself, the KTR is the closest to the Centaur a pedal can get, according to its creator, who – by the way – thinks it sounds exactly the same.
