In Pokémon Yellow, some elements are based on the anime. Red, the player character, starts with a Pikachu, which is based on Ash's Pikachu. Red later receives the trio of Kanto starter Pokémon in similar circumstances as Ash: Bulbasaur from a girl based on Melanie, Charmander from a boy based on Damian, and Squirtle from an Officer Jenny.Ash is also quite dense when it comes to matters of the field of romance. Throughout the anime, Ash has only displayed open interest in a female only once, and nothing came out of it. Though some girls in the anime have shown obvious (and subtle) affection towards him, Ash meets it with nearly unfailing obtuseness, which some characters have also noticed. Even when it involves other people's romance, Ash is usually oblivious until someone points it out to him. Also, Ash did not lose any official trials in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, although he has lost to Nanu in an unofficial battle. The amount of experience points a Pokémon has is tied directly to its level. Though the amount varies depending on species, always remaining consistent throughout an evolutionary family, a given amount of experience points will always set a Pokémon at the corresponding level.
