About this deal

While we tested the Eco and Boost power modes, we generally used the vacuum in Clean Sense IQ mode as we wanted to get a good feel for how the Clean Sense IQ technology worked. When there was lots of dirt or debris on the floor, the suction was increased automatically and then returned to normal when the area was clean. The suctioning capability of this vacuum was superb, and we never had to run over the same area more than twice. On the whole Dyson vacuums are lighter and more compact than those offered by Shark. And when it comes to runtime of cordless vacuums, Dyson’s models also last longer than Shark. If we compare the Dyson V15 Detect with the Shark Anti Hair Wrap we’ve already mentioned, the Shark model offers 40 minutes run time while the Dyson has a battery life of 60 minutes. Both of these run times are based on using the vacuums on the standard mode but if you use the boost modes, you can expect the battery to drain faster. Type: Cordless Upright/cannister hybrid, detachable hose and wand effectively make it a cannister vacuum as well Emptying the dust cup on any vacuum isn’t exactly fun and that’s why it’s important to consider the size of the dust bin on a new vacuum cleaner. Dyson cordless vacuums take the trophy here with bigger dust cups (the Dyson Outsize Absolute has a capacity of 0.5 gallons, whereas the Shark Pet Plus holds up to 0.085 gallons of dust and dirt.

When vacuuming exclusively in boost mode, that battery lasted for just 11.5 minutes, so it’s best to utilize all the suction levels to prolong the battery during use. And though the selection of tools is useful, we’d have preferred if the US model was supplied with the mini motorized pet tool that comes with this vacuum if you buy it in the UK. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: Care and maintenance When compared to a budget vacuum like the Aspiron Cordless Vacuum , the Shark starts to look like an expensive option. However, it comes with the Shark vacuum pedigree and it offers more accessories as well as better design and functionality. It's a versatile cleaner that can be operated in one of several configurations, depending on what surface you're cleaning. Floors are cleaned easily in the upright vacuum cleaner mode. From here, you can detach the wand, or just the handle for a speedy transition to overhead or above floor cleaning while the vacuum pod remains attached to the floorhead.

Having the pod in one hand while cleaning overhead with the other makes it far more comfortable than we’ve experienced with many other cordless vacuums. Though when we used it for very high cleaning, the wand did start to feel heavy after prolonged use. Having said that, you can use it without the wand for areas that are easier to reach. The dustbin is compact and it’ll need emptying regularly. During testing, we frequently had to manually pull out the dirt that got trapped inside due to tangled hair, making it quite a messy job. If you'd like to see a rundown of all the cordless models offered by Shark and Dyson, see the table linked here. At the top of the handle is a LED display screen that displays the selected power mode and the remaining battery life. Built into this are buttons for turning the vacuum on and off and switching between Eco, Clean Sense IQ, and Boost mode. The vacuum doesn't have a charging station or base, making it easy to store it away in a closet or other space between uses.

With all the controls on the handle, adjusting the suction power or floor type as you vacuum is effortless, however, we did have to keep repositioning our hand for comfort, the handle can be uncomfortable if your grip is too close to the control panel.

The main vacuum pod becomes portable in what Shark calls "powered lift-away mode". This allows you to carry the pod in one hand while using any combination of the tools, wand, or even the main floorhead. It means that for overhead cleaning, you don't have to hold the bulk of the vacuum above your head while you clean. And when cleaning other surfaces such as sofas, you can rest it on the seat while you vacuum, making it a much easier task. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: Setup and assembly The main floorhead has two motorized brush rolls that work in tandem to collect dirt. The soft front roll collects fine dust and the PowerFin brushroll which agitates carpets for a deeper clean. And for dull days, headlights on the front of the floorhead illuminate the floor and dirt ahead. The Shark Stratos Cordless with Clean Sense IQ IZ862H can be neatly folded for storage, and stays upright (Image credit: Future) Shark Stratos Cordless with Clean Sense IQ IZ862H performance Some of Dyson’s latest vacuums, such as the V15 Detect and the V11, will also automatically adjust the suction power to suit the floor type they’re being used on too - something Shark’s model can’t offer.Dyson and Shark are two titans of the modern household vacuum industry, each enjoying a level of brand recognition that isn't common within the industry. The Vertex does come with an additional Pet Multi-Tool attachment for removing pet hair, and has a larger dust canister at 1qt / 0.95L compared to 0.72qt / 0.68L, but if you don’t need the pet hair tool we can’t see the smaller canister being a deal-breaker for many people.

The best corded Shark vacuum we've tested is the Shark APEX Upright. It feels more sturdily built than the Dyson Ball Animal 3, as well as cheaper upright models in Shark's lineup. It also delivers stellar performance on bare floors and does a pretty good job on low and high-pile carpets. However, for raw suction power, it falls short of the Dyson. Its floorhead is more tangle-prone, and unlike the Dyson, it isn't height-adjustable, which would make it easier to clean shaggier carpeting. If you struggle to clean overhead with heavy cordless vacuums, the Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum one is a good option thanks to the powered-lift away function that means you don’t need to hold the main part of the vacuum up high. When testing the vacuum, we never came close to running down the battery when vacuuming our 1,600sq ft / 150sq m home, and we’d often end a vacuuming session with about 40% of battery left. This vacuum's dust collection is decent, and it’s reasonably priced with a lengthy warranty so it’ll suit lots of people. Plus, the removable battery means you don’t need to find a spot next to a power outlet to store it. It won’t win any prizes for sleek looks and streamlined design, though, and emptying the dustbin can be messy. How does the Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum compare to competitors?

Dyson vs Shark: Cordless Vacuums

Unlike Dyson, Shark has persisted in maintaining a pretty large selection of corded vacuums in several different configurations. If you're the kind of buyer who isn't fully onboard with the cordless revolution, you should probably look at what they offer first. Shark's best known for their selection of upright vacuums, which include the Navigator and Rotator ranges; we've tested the Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away, the Shark Rotator Lift-Away ADV, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe, and the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Speed. Most use the brand's 'Lift-Away' design, which places the main motor unit and dustbin within a removable canister module that can be lifted free of its floorhead and wand and carried around in one hand, enabling you to clean hard-to-reach areas with greater ease than the more traditionally-configured Dyson. Several replacement parts for the vacuum are available to buy from Shark, enabling you to prolong the life if anything breaks. Furthermore, the lengthy 5-year warranty covers manufacturing faults if you buy it from an authorized retailer. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: Price and availability To empty the 0.72qt / 0.68L dust cup, which is fitted with a seal to prevent dust and allergens escaping into the air, you detach the main unit from the wand, and release a catch on the cup to deposit the contents into a bin. Dyson cordless vacuums typically have a longer run time than Shark models, but even the Dyson V11 Outsize will only last around 15 minutes if you continuously use it on the Boost mode. The newest Dyson models claim to have a run time of 60 minutes, whereas the latest Shark cordless vacuums have a maximum battery life of 40 minutes.
