About this deal

The 17mm is officially listed as having a maximum magnification of 0.08x (MFT) or 0.16x (35mm format), so either way, the specifications go in contrast with the actual results. Here again we can assume that the higher magnification of the Sigma in this real world test is due to more pronounced focus breathing when focusing at the shortest focus distance. This would not be easy to handle during post-processing, so this is something to keep in mind. See the below crop for a better look.Like the 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary, the 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary features SIGMA's latest design technologies to offer F1.4 brightness while minimizing optical aberrations. So yeah, I really do think the Sigma 16mm F1.4is quite literally the best value wide angle lens for Sony APS-C cameras.

The new SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary is the world’s first interchangeable lens for mirrorless Sony E-mount cameras in the APS-C format to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) and F1.4 brightness. The lens for Micro Four Thirds offers a 32mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with the same f-number of 1.4. This is the large-diameter wide-angle lens for which mirrorless camera users have been waiting.

A brand new addition to the mirrorless range of primes is the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary, a wide-angle lens with a bright f/1.4 aperture available for both Sony E and Micro Four Thirds mounts. For Sony APS-C users, it is the first 24mm lens (35mm equivalent) with a bright f/1.4 aperture for the system. In the case of Micro Four Thirds however, it joins an already ample number of bright aperture primes with similar focal lengths such as the Panasonic Leica 15mm f/1.7, Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.2 Pro and Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8. If the lens is Sony E fit, then the APS-C format gives an equivalent of 24mm, a classic ultra-wide focal length. This would also be an excellent lens for street photography, landscapes and architecture, although it is always possible to use lenses outside their normal, accepted applications, sometimes to very good effect. Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C Image Quality

The Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C lens has a very wide focus ring. There are no hard stops at both ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Polariser users should be pleased that the 67mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus.

That being said, for hiking or anything else strenuous, it would definitely go into a bag until it was needed, as the weight and front-heaviness does wear down on you after a while. In the case of both lenses, the best performance is found at f/4 but f/2, f/2.8 and f/5.6 all reach similar levels of sharpness.

Update Procedure

As we’ve seen with an increasing number of Sigma’s Global Vision lenses for Canon DSLRs, this new M-mount lens is preloaded with data for enabling in-camera corrections for aberrations like peripheral illumination, chromatic aberration and diffraction, where featured in the host camera. Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN | C: Performance Focusing is usefully internal and manual focusing is possible when set via the camera body. Full-time manual focus override is also available at any time simply by rotating the focus ring. The lens weighs less than half a pound (0.48lbs), it’s roughly three inches long and takes 55mm filters. Quite impressive for a lens that has a maximum aperture of f/1.4. This lens is noticeably smaller Sigma 16mm f/1.4 it’s competing against. Like the Sigma 16mm, the Sony is dust and moisture resistant. I didn’t get to test the lens out in the rain, but I have subjected G series lenses to light showers before and they have faired just fine. I’m sure it will be the same story with this lens. own a weather-sealed MFT body (keep in mind that only the mount is protected against dust and moisture, not the entire lens barrel)
