This can be turned off by pressing the Display button, and there's also a new handy sensor underneath the viewfinder, which detects that you're looking through it and turns off the LCD display to both save power and stop it from distracting you (this can be enabled or disabled in the main menu).

My review of the EOS 450D was delayed by a malfunctioning EFS 18-55mm lens which refused to auto-focus properly, despite the camera claiming otherwise.This is fortunate, because of course the EOS 450D’s main party trick is its live monitor view feature. PictBridge functionality has been expanded so that photographers can correct horizons and add picture effects before printing. The EOS 450D is designed to make photography a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience.
