than cute moments and at the end, I don't really know where the story actually had intended to go, or if it was just supposed to be about their life. Sawtooth, a charcoal cat with sharp teeth, doesn't have time for beauty and daydreams because he has experienced the uncaring brutality of the outside world. While it’s as trite and misleading as any other artistic commonplace, reducing as it does beauty to an aesthetic cryogenic freezing tank, in its carelessness it raises a fascinating question: if we accept that the intention underlining all artistic endeavors is a fear of death then where, exactly, does that leave us -- the audience -- as we go seeking art? Of their number it is only Snowbébé, a cat six years old who appears no older than a kitten of several months, who finds value in the artifacts of the Louvre and only Snowbébé who responds to art’s seductive power. Marcel's tragic past becomes the catalyst for the slowly paced but highly intriguing story: 50 years ago, he lost his sister at the museum, and he believes her saw her walk into a painting where she might still be living to this day.Taiyo Matsumoto's style is quite distinct and takes you by surprise at it slowly creates a unique world that involves cats in an Art Museum. Frankweiler in that it takes place inside a museum where people (cats) are living; there's even a scene that could be an homage to Konigsberg where two kids sneak off from their tour and play in a display of antique furniture. Het is een echte Matsumoto qua thematiek, het belang van kunst, de surreële elementen die erin verwerkt zijn, maar ook de outcasts die worstelen met hun eenzaamheid, pijn en het zoeken naar een eigen plek in deze wereld. Both Montvalon and Cecille acknowledge that the Mona Lisa is not the original painting because the alterations have changed our relationship with it in ways we cannot realize.

All his time hiding within what many consider the apotheosis of human culture and beauty has not gifted him with special insight into matters of life and death but in fact left him even less human than his decidedly feline friends. The characters are so well done and thought through that they make the brightest stars painted on this canvas. Matsumoto may be smart enough not to condescend to his subjects until they become precious but he’s also aware enough to realize that unless he adopts an urbane humor the cats might become boring, the thematics dreadfully dull.
