About this deal

Daarom een gemiddelde van drie sterretjes *** (vier sterren voor de inhoud en twee sterretjes voor de schrijfstijl, de manier waarop het verhaal verteld wordt). The DAR Scholarship Committee first envisioned in 1923 by our 12th President General Lora Haines Cook has been awarding scholarships for 100 years! Centraal in Dochters van de Dordogne staat de relatie van de drie zussen onderling en hoe ze proberen te overleven tijdens de barre oorlogsjaren. These characters were so well developed and even though the personalities were so different they loved each other deeply. She has a rebellious streak and is determined to do what she can to help the Resistance in their efforts to stymie the German occupation.

Daughters of War - Dinah Jefferies, Author

Soms bladerde ik zelfs terug omdat ik dacht dat ik iets gemist had, wat uiteindelijk niet zo bleek te zijn. It is Hugo, the local doctor, and his wife Marie, who initially experience the realities of life under the Nazis. At times I felt the story was overly long in places and I found that in the beginning and perhaps for a good quarter of the book that it was slow going with not much happening.

The Writing: The characters are well-drawn and the author uses vivid details to help us feel like we’re in the midst of the action and facing the same circumstances. Daughters of War is an emotive and descriptive family saga, charting the back end of the Second World War.

Daughters of War Series by Dinah Jefferies - Goodreads

The realities of war are brought home in a shocking manner but alongside this the community spirit and unity is highlighted as well as some very touching natural and emotional moments too.As is usual with her books the author used colourful word pictures to build up the geographical setting so that I felt that I had visited the Dordogne again. At first, the sisters seem to lead a charmed life, tucked away in their cottage and fortified by the food Florence seems to be able to create out of nothing.
