About this deal

His modern iteration, though, arguably begins with 1997 full-length ‘Time Out Of Mind’ – a timely and thorough recasting of his work, it tapped into pre-rock ‘n’ roll forms to produce a meditation on identity and ageing, opening out a fresh chapter for rock’s poet laureate. Dylan didn’t miss a word, and Larry Campbell— whose contributions on many of this album’s live versions are diamonds and gold — strode flawlessly into his electric lead as Soy Bomb was removed by security. The song is mesmerizingly dark, but hearing Dylan bite down with panther’s teeth on “I’m getting old,” it’s easy to conclude that he was feeling nothing but the opposite.

As ever with Bootleg Series, it’s fascinating for fans to hear familiar material inThe mule’s kickin’ in the stall, but almost no other lyrics are changed, though he shuffles over a few. Dylan would try songs out in different keys, abruptly switching in the middle and expecting the band to remap their own chord progressions without a moment’s hesitation.

Lanois accentuated the gloom and submerged the album in a damp chill of effects pedals and reverb until Dylan seemed to be speaking to us from the beyond. All tracks on Disc Four are previously unavailable with the exception of “Make You Feel My Love” (May 21, 1998, Los Angeles), previously released on the ‘Things Have Changed’ maxi-single. The version of Til’ I Fell In Love With You from Buenos Aires is also raucous and totally committed and probably the best version I have ever heard of this song. Whilst I appreciate there will be a wide range of views on this from within the Dylan community, from a personal perspective, all of this has cemented my view of Time Out Of Mind as one of the greatest albums Dylan has ever released. Fragments is about the process, the journey the songs travelled on their way to becoming the finished album. Influenced by the raw, haunted spirit of vintage Delta blues by the likes of Charley Patton, and occasionally slipping into half-remembered phrases from dusty recordings from the first decades of the 20 th century, the language of Time Out of Mind is plain, pared back, shorn of any artifice or excess bulk – wise and worn-out lines like ‘’when you think that you’ve lost everything, you find out you can always lose a little more’’ communicate more with using fewer words.
