The director was impressed with her wild imagination and considered it a perfect fit for the troublemaking character.

There were allegations that the film was plagiarized from The Alien, a 1967 script by Indian director Satyajit Ray, who stated, " E. Indeed, it wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized that there are virtually no scenes (until the climax and with the exception of Elliott’s mother) which show adult characters entirely within the frame. Spielberg calculated that the film would hit home harder if the children were really saying goodbye to E.

Political commentator George Will was one of few to pan the film, feeling it spread subversive notions about childhood and science. the Extraterrestrial is the spirit of those iridescent memories captured, like an immortal lightning bug, in movie form. The two-disc DVD release which followed on October 22, 2002, contained the original theatrical and 20th Anniversary extended versions of the film. In '77 Spielberg even dipped his toes into the deep science-fiction of alien lifeforms with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but nothing he'd done up until that point matched the excitement and youthful adventure of E. T. arrived in theaters in 1982, almost immediately becoming the highest-grossing film of all time and maintaining the title for over a decade. Underlining these themes is the story of a divorce that Elliott and his siblings find themselves having to fight their way through. Four heads were created for filming, one as the main animatronic and the others for facial expressions, as well as a costume.

Most of these extras were created for the original DVD release back in 2002, while some first appeared in 2012 for Blu-ray.

Dialogue is always clear and intelligible, surround channels almost constantly engaged, if only to add some subtle ambience. Elliott doesn’t just need a friend; he needs a change in perspective, a way of opening his vision to the greater world.
