At school the next day, Elliott begins to experience a much stronger empathic connection with the alien, including exhibiting signs of intoxication (because the alien is at Elliott's home, drinking beer and watching television) and freeing the frogs in his biology class. Underlining these themes is the story of a divorce that Elliott and his siblings find themselves having to fight their way through. Four heads were created for filming, one as the main animatronic and the others for facial expressions, as well as a costume.

Most of these extras were created for the original DVD release back in 2002, while some first appeared in 2012 for Blu-ray.

Dialogue is always clear and intelligible, surround channels almost constantly engaged, if only to add some subtle ambience. Elliott doesn’t just need a friend; he needs a change in perspective, a way of opening his vision to the greater world.
