I gravitated to the "seaside" variation of their product lineup after a wholly pleasant experience with Gin Mare, and frankly I think I was expecting another riff on the same general style: a gin that doesn't lead with citrus or juniper but instead focuses on a core of savory flavors. Boasting a collection of native Scottish botanicals foraged from the coastline, Seaside Gin is defined by juniper, soft minerality and sweet notes.

Ground ivy has long been used to clarify, preserve and flavour beer before the introduction of hops. Maritime-inspired gins are somewhat in vogue at the moment and Edinburgh Gin were relatively early to the game.With its signature botanicals listed as orange peel, mulberries, pine buds, lavender and lemongrass, the tasting notes aren’t too surprising – but sometimes surprises aren’t always best! It helps us understand the number of visitors, where the visitors are coming from, and the pages they navigate. Edinburgh Seaside Gin miniature will perfectly complement a personal or corporate function held amidst a seaside backdrop or with a bluish or Mediterranean motif. On the palate, piney juniper gives way to the citrus of the orange peel and coriander, with subtle floral lavender complimenting the piney notes. In June 2014 they established their two gin stills and visitor experience and bar in central Edinburgh, working in partnership with Heriot Way Dept of Brewing and Distilling to establish a centre of gin excellence and innovation in Edinburgh.Partnering with the city’s Heriot-Watt University, who run the world-renowned Master’s in Brewing and Distilling, Edinburgh Gin have a well established link with the local university. As well as the signature botanicals mentioned earlier (bladderwrack seaweed, scurvy grass and ground ivy), there are also the more traditional gin botanicals of juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root, orris root, cardamom and grains of paradise. They also give a nod to the Scottish Art Deco movement during gin’s glory days in the 1920’s by way of the bottle label and design. Botanicals such as juniper, citrus peels and coriander seeds are then added and macerated overnight. Scurvygrass possesses a flavour that is akin to that of horseradish and watercress, both close relatives of this herb.
