About this deal

Although it mentions Christmas in the title, this is not a typical commercially-driven Christmas story with the usual 'Christmassy' themed tale. Told in the form of a letter written by Mia's Grandpa to her, a letter that is brought out at Christmas by Mia now as an adult and shared with her children. It has beautiful illustrations by Jim Field which support the text and really draw the reader into the story. Although the name of the book suggests it is a Christmas story, Christmas is not the focus of the book.

Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. A Christmas story like many others, about celebrating, happiness, families, gathering around the tree, sharing presents, but with a point to make about what is bigger than all of this, the world around us, our home, and what we have done and are doing to it that damages it, not just for us, but for the creatures and nature all around us. Story of love between a grandpa and his granddaughter together with powerful messages about our world and how we should look after it.I didn't see the point of this being a Christmas book, a family sit in front of a Christmas tree in their large house and say that each year they read a letter from Grandad. Would link well with RE but I think this makes a lovely read aloud that all children would appreciate.

Trees, animals, sea pollution, air, ice caps and sea-life are just some of the aspects of earth that Grandpa talks about in his letter to Mia. I had such high hopes of a beautiful Christmas story about a young girl and her grandpa, hoping to bring back memories of my own. A gentle and touching narrative about caring for our planet, which captures the love we feel at Christmas towards people who are no longer with us. Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap. This is a good book to use at this time of year, as it incorporates an important message regarding the welfare of our earth with the upcoming celebration of Christmas.Michael Morpurgo frames his powerful message about protecting the environment in this beautiful personal story about a grandpas wish for his granddaughter to live in a better world. It’s a timely lesson which young folk can learn, especially at Christmas when there is so much waste. I would use the book in lower or upper KS2 where I think children will be more able to engage with the longer story and be interested in ways in which they can help the environment such as by planting trees. There are better books about helping the environment, this was quite gloomy and it seemed pointless to be tacked on to a Christmas story. litter in oceans and melting ice caps, therefore these pages will likely need to be explained to KS1 and lower KS2 and discussed with upper KS2.Find out about the latest book in the 'Girl, Missing' series, Secret Sister, in this short video by author Sophie McKenzie. Grandpa has loved watching Mia in his garden; teaching her about the environment, growing plants, naming wildlife, and on trips to the beach. In 1976 Michael and his wife Clare started the charity Farms For City Children, which aims to relieve the poverty of experience of young children from inner city and urban areas. If I could crack a realism feel to the lighting and mood then I felt it would work well with Michael’s beautiful words.
