Lilibet was the thread I needed to pull me through The Windsor Knot, and I sure had a heck of a lot of fun watching it unravel. The book is strongest when she is on the case, rather than when she relies on a coterie of trusted staff to do all of the legwork. When the Metropolitan Police and M15 report to the Queen, they regard her as a naive, sheltered and doddering old woman and are hesitant to shock her with the details. I much preferred the scenes involving the queen whether she was pondering the case or doing ordinary type stuff like talking with her husband.

Events to mark the anniversary included a Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey followed by the unveiling of a new Jubilee Walkway panoramic panel in Parliament Square. It was certainly creative to have a piano player die at Windsor castle in a dressing gown appearing to have taken part in kinky sex games that left him dead.I liked how the Queen was the brain in the shadows, leading the murder investigation even to the unsuspecting eyes of MI5, moving her pawns to find all the clues needed to solve the case. But everything changed in December 1936 when her uncle – King Edward VIII - abdicated, leaving her father as King, and her as next in line to the throne. In general, I recommend just rolling with the story instead of investing a lot of time analyzing whether or not aspects are realistic. Although the audiobook worked for me on so many levels, I couldn't keep track of some of the red herrings! They're such a great option when I'm in the mood for murder (and I'm always up for a dead body), but not a grisly gory one. She fits in the work of the ‘little grey cells’ in between her royal duties, and sends (the fictional) Captain Rozie Oshodi, her new Assistant Private Secretary, to do most of the leg work.
