About this deal

He lives in a very demanding 250-year-old farmhouse and spent four years gutting and rebuilding his previous home. Having owned nearly every tool Leatherman has produced, the P2 is the easiest and most adaptable tool they’ve ever made. After we tested the Free P2 for several weeks, other full-size multi-tools, such as the classic Leatherman Wave+, started to feel clunky and laborious to open. In his test, he’s able to make 150 cuts through thick, twisted sisal rope with the 154CM blade before it stops being able to cut paper. We prefer pliers-based ones, since they offer the most complete functionality and often have knife blades that lock in the open position, limiting the potential for injury.

Though I rarely rely on the knife blade included in the majority of multitools — it is there, and I will use it.Love my Surge, but it's too big and heavy for EDC, and the Wingman has always felt like a little toy to me. It’s not a perfect system—we usually ended up popping up two or three tools and then pushing the unneeded ones back down. We’ve personally lost several fingernails to older nail nick opening systems and appreciate the thought that went into this.

It's unlike any multi-tool before it, but I'm confident with some patience and time it'll be worth it. All locking features means that every tool and knife on the body of the handle, with the exception of the plier head, will lock into place. In fact, the Skeletool’s pliers, knife, screwdrivers, and bottle opener were all we ever needed to deal with minor fixes and get on with our day. ounces, over 2½ ounces more than the Skeletool (but still less than many other full-size multi-tools).Here’s hoping that in the coming years, Victorinox can introduce some improvements—a locking blade, easier tool deployment, and a more-functional screwdriver would all be great.

It also has features that many non-pliers models lack—all of the tools, including the knife, lock in the open position, and it has a pocket clip.He adds that the tool “feels like perfectly broken in, from Day 1” and that it is “smooth and comfortable to use, both in terms of the actual motions of deploying and closing the tools, and in its use. My wife loves messing around with all manner of craft suff, always has something on the go, fixes her own stuff ect very handy. When you dig into the numbers, it might surprise you to learn that the most-carried multi-tool in our community by a large margin came out twenty years ago. I'll still keep my Surge in the drawer (too heavy to carry regularly, but it has the tool set needed for home owner/ urgent toy repair needs) but I'm keen to take this P2 for a spin. Many multitools on the market today suffer from flex under duress – a situation where the arms of the pliers begin to twist under torsion.

Although we prefer the stripped-down nature of the Skeletool, the Free P2 does add scissors and a package opener, which we found routinely useful day to day.But it turned out that making a Leatherman that works out of the box like a well broken-in tool required a near-total rebuild. Their removable bit driver kit gives you the ability to slide an adapter over the Phillip’s head screwdriver on your tool and access any ¼ inch bit you like.
