Barbera, Jack, and William McBrien, Stevie: A Biography of Stevie Smith, Oxford University Press, 1986. She knew how the repetition of words and phrases could create music and cast spells, and at the same time empty them of meaning. You can read the poem here, but in this post we want to analyse Stevie Smith’s language in this poem, in an effort to get to grips with its meaning. Born Florence Margaret Smith in Hull, Yorkshire in 1902, Stevie Smith moved with her family to the North London suburbs when three, then lived in the same house the rest of her life.

The dead man’s words were not enclosed in helpful quotation marks in the first stanza, so there are no clear markers to tell us who is speaking. By altering the first stanza’s final phrase, what does Smith suggest about the life of the drowned man?The reworking of ‘I was much further out’ into ‘I was much too far out all my life’ tells us that this is a ghostly voice addressing us, and also broadens out the physical drowning into something more symbolic: cries for help are often mistaken for laughs of good humour; ‘hysteria’, as T.

Although she reportedly avoided contemporary poetry, echoes of Smith’s favorite poets ( William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge) sound again and again throughout her work. As “eccentric” as her light verse seems, it’s actually packed with the same cargo that was celebrated in the work of her more famous contemporaries. Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. She published several collections of short prose and letters as well as nearly a dozen volumes of verse. Have students think-pair-share a time when things went wrong because their words or gestures were misunderstood by others. The first stanza tells us that nobody heard the drowning man (his dying moans being retrospectively recounted: he is now ‘the dead man’), yet he continued to cry for help and wave his arms, his flailing mistaken for friendly waving. Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. Not Waving, But Drowning’, Loyle’s new album, gives yet more evidence – as if it were needed – of his razor-sharp flow and his unique storytelling ability. However, the integrity with which she adhered to her own style earned Stevie Smith a considerable amount of respect, and, more than ten years after her death, her reputation with both readers and fellow poets is deservedly high. If she is not at minimum, blending her identity with the person in the poem, I don't see why she wrote this the way she did.

Smith’s poem asks us to think about the ways in which we misunderstand or misread the people around us—what opinion does the gathered crowd seem to have of the drowned man?

Contributing to the deceptive quality of the poet’s work was her language, which a Times Literary Supplement reviewer described as “Smith’s most distinctive achievement. The album opens with ‘Dear Jean’, a letter to his mother in which he’s telling her that he has found the love of his life, “a woman from the skies”, and he’s moving out. When ‘the dead man’ moaned in the first stanza, the wording struck us as odd: he was clearly still alive (though done for) when he ‘lay moaning’ at the start of the poem, but the juxtaposition of ‘the dead man’ and the fact that he was ‘moaning’ made us do a double take: oh, he’s dead now, and he was moaning then.
