Ponniyin Selvan (பொன்னியின் செல்வன்) is a classic Tamil historical novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. Chinna Pazhuverttarayar realises that his daughter is married to Pandiya's heir and she has gone there. In many ways this is an excellent reference for some amazing historical writing – the characters are introduced gradually, the pace is excellent despite the size, the plot is intriguing and everything ties up beautifully at the end. Like Pandyas, she wants to kill Aditha Karikalan, who was once in love with her, since he killed Veerapandiyan with whom she seemed to have developed a relationship.I cannot read the book in original Tamil by Kalki, but enjoyed the English translation by Karthik Narayanan nevertheless. However the attempt is laudable, more so the intent to reach the greatness of the Chozha dynasty and such an interesting novel to the Tamil illiterate. It's so lyrical and the metaphors he used are so good that you are swept away by the feeling it provokes, that you want to dive into the book and live in that gorgeously descriptive world he wrote. awhile, he learns that the Pazhuvettarayar family crossed him by telling him about Ponniyin Selvan's drowning and are on their way to Tanjavur.

I know, the review looks too "basic", I wrote it 10 years back when I was 21 when I clearly liked the adventure in the book, but now I think I like the political drama more! The 5-year-old son of Veerapandiyan and his Queen, raised by Nandini and the Aabathudhavigal (Pandyan conspirators) who declared him the successor of Veerapandiyan at Thirupurambiyam Pallipadai. The novel has been serialized in five parts, and all five parts are available for download in PDF format from this page. Although he did not want to be king, Uttama Chozha (Madurantaka), the son of Kandaraditya and Sembian Mahadevi, ruled for 12 years. Sixty years ago, at a time when the literacy level was low and when the English-educated Tamils looked down on writings in Tamil, Kalki’s circulation touched 71,000 copies – the largest for any weekly in the county then – when it serialised his historical novels.

To this Nambi reveals that Nandhini was his foster sister and disappeared under mysterious circumstances. After Aditya Karikalan beheaded the injured Veerapandiyan, Nandhini joined Pandya conspirators and vowed to avenge Veerapandiyan's death by killing Karikalan and destroying the Chola dynasty. None of the emperors appears to have possessed the avarice and desire for the throne that would have required them to sacrifice or suffer for their own families. Maduranthakan is stopped by his mother who tells him to leave all his will to become the Chola emperor but he does not pay heed to her request. There he gets a chance to follow Pandiya aabathudavigal who talks about murdering Sundar Chola and his sons tomorrow.
