About this deal

Working in the education system and having my own child who suffers from anxiety, I can see how important children’s picture books are to easing the worry monster. For more books about starting school or nursery see our Starting school or nursery booklist on Words for Life. I didn't have a care in the world and thought that anyone who got 'stressed out' was just wasting their time.

So I just pretended that I rolled smoothly through life - easy come, easy go - and that strategy worked perfectly. I think this will help me to get a sense of what my students are feeling and to observe their expressions. It shows children that it's okay to worry about somethings and to overcome them all you need to do is talk to an adult about the worry and it will begin to get smaller and smaller. This makes Ruby’s story very authentic and I hope that readers will see that their feelings are substantiated through this valuable storybook character. I particularly like that it never says what Ruby's concern is - meaning that readers can apply any of their own worries to this story, and solve it the same way. I love the image of the classroom because there's a diverse array of kids and the way the colors shift as the worry grows.

It progresses throughout the pages and children will notice this and the impact it has upon Ruby as she becomes more and more unhappy and her emotions change as well. These easy-to-deliver resources are designed to help children settle into the nursery and classroom environment, and will allow them to develop their communication, language and literacy skills. But when Ruby befriends a young boy, she discovers that everyone has worries, and not only that, there's a great way to get rid of them too . Staying true to the essence of the original, the new edition includes more advice and experience to reflect changes in digital publishing, self-publishing, and the explosion of YA and children's writing more broadly. Author Tom Percival tells us why it's so important for children to be able to talk about their fears.

She was out partying all night with her friend, both of them drinking way too much and doing things they don’t want their husbands to know about. We encourage our kids to eat healthily and get enough exercise, so it makes sense that we also help them to understand their emotional wellbeing and focus on exploring ways to improve mental health. I feel it's important for children, and their parents, to be offered books that might help them navigate their emotional journeys. Looking back, it's blindingly obvious that you can't bottle up all the thoughts and feelings that you don't want to have. No one else was able to see her worry not even her friends or teachers, pretty soon it was the only thing she was able to think about.

I have a freebie that is part of a larger resource so that you can try it out in your classroom today! Personifying the worry injects the story with humour as it becomes ridiculously big, while carrying the message that it's okay to talk about things that are bothering you.
