About this deal

The details of Egyptian myths were really well-explained, but they felt so completely out of place with the rest of the novel. My cat, cranky old Ubesti, came down with me sometimes, though she much preferred the warm, sunlit stones under the skylights in our house.

I didn't find this as action-packed as White's other books, but I liked the different stories she wove in throughout and for the most part enjoyed Isadora's (sometimes angsty) voice. And while the violet gold does lend a bit of a steam punk fantasy level it wasn't over the top which was nice. Something that grows inside of you against your will and without your consent, slowly taking over more and more vital parts until it kills you. Here on Goodreads you'll see some fairly low ratings for this book, but I don't think they're necessarily deserved.

I also enjoyed that the plot centers around courtly intrigue and military politics instead of the Martial world like in other Danmei's I've read. The Symbol of Chaos (also known as the Chaos Star) originates from Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné stories and their dichotomy of Law and Chaos. Kiersten White is probably best known for her Paranormalcy series which reads like a kid high on candy. I don't know how many volumes or how many years the book will cover, but I feel the teenager will become one bada*s warrior and I'm here for it. But I mean, there's like barely any mention or description of her home from the outsideLanguage is mild ("piss," "screw it," "bastard," "freaking"), and the sexual content stays mostly in innuendo territory, though there's a kiss or two and the story of Egyptian god infidelity. When the opportunity presents itself to move from Egypt to San Diego, to live with her brother for a while, naturally she jumps on the chance to do so. Please, if you've loved the novels Seven Seas has already licensed, and you want to keep digging in this danmei world, you can't miss Priest's novels!

When she finds out about this secret things about Ry, my heart broke for them because she was so hurt and mad. This book worked better as a contemporary YA romance than as a Paranormal or an Urban Fantasy, as it is categorized. Outside of this book by favorite god is Set, don't ask me why because I don't even know it, he just is. That is why I cannot find myself detesting her completely, because really, is any teenaged girl ever so perfect? Most books tend to focus on the Greek or Roman gods - and I'm not complaining about this because Greek gods are my jam - but it was nice to see White break apart from that and choose to focus on the Egyptian Gods which I don't know that much about honestly.
