About this deal

I loved learning more about the Malaysian culture through this story, I thought the somewhat magical bits in the story were executed so well, and the Chinese folklore was super interesting to learn about. Hannah’s proven storytelling skills are ideally suited to depicting such cataclysmic events, but her tendency to sentimentalize undermines the gravitas of this tale. It’s just a normal morning when Anna's husband announces that he's leaving her for her best friend and taking their two daughters with him.

The evening performance is cancelled after the United States Weather Bureau issues a tornado warning. Another thing that I loved about the first novel, was the beautiful description of old Malaya and its culture. Choo pulls these myths and traditions from a variety of sources, all rooted in Malay culture; as such, the supernatural elements of The Night Tiger become as much a part of the worldbuilding as the incredible historical detail packed into Choo's setting. It was difficult to get used to the new fashion, in which flat-chested tomboys like me should suddenly become popular. In 1995, an elderly unnamed widow is moving into an Oregon nursing home on the urging of her controlling son, Julien, a surgeon. Malaysia has a lot of abandoned colonial houses left by the British, and they speak to a completely different lifestyle.

But Choo pulls it off brilliantly, never once slipping into territory that feels silly or coincidental. In it, Yangsze Choo ( The Ghost Bride) weaves together ancient Malayan superstitions and traditions to tell a story of missing fingers, man-eating tigers, dancehall girls, twins and even a train to the land of the dead. plots and subplots with themes of superstition, Confucianism, and the desire for personal fulfillment versus the tug of familial loyalty. A Most Anticipated Book ( Glamour, Real Simple, Parade, Bustle, BookPage, Goodreads, PopSugar, BookRiot, Refinery29, Tor. Facsimile reproduction of the 1794 illuminated manuscript, published by The William Blake Trust and the Tate Gallery, 2009, in William Blake: The Complete Illuminated Books.

To Ren, peering out the window at the top of the stairs, the trees are a waving green ocean surrounding the Bungalow. Now, I’m wondering why I don’t read more of these types of books and am thinking maybe I should lower my defenses and try reading more of them. I loved the well developed central characters of Ren and Ji-Lin, particularly Ji-Lin, she is a strong woman, although I am not so certain about the romance elements that involved her. Moreover, the story moved from the mythology oriented story into a who-dunnit which was a bit confusing. Indrasil, the fiery tempered lion tamer, who is rumored to have only nearly killed a roustabout who angered him.The author narrates the book, but the inflections and voice changes were not strong enough or distinct enough for me, and the switch in narratives often caught me off guard. Ji-Lin is a trainee dressmaker, who is secretly working as a dance hall girl, Louise, at the Flower Dance Hall to pay off her mother's mahjong debts. Undeniably, however, embedded in Choo’s novel is a criticism of colonialism, albeit not as harsh as deserved. Choo sharpens our vision and refines our hearing with touches of unexplainable things that go bump in the night. Fans of this Author's debut book, The Ghost Bride will love this sweeping tale set in Malaya (Malaysia) in the 1930's.
