About this deal

This book is full of shock value, and most of the story isn’t very realistic; however, it grabs the attention. There's some in the first story that I think comes on much too strong and detracts from the overall effect.

A “ multi-stabber tarot” deck—something Mo worked on for years that was lovingly finished by Richard and her friends and family—is available on the site as well.I preferred the first story most, I misunderstood the advertisement thinking it was the entire book, however i felt the ending suited the story. So if you checked "Menacing", "Obsession", and "Psychological Suspense", NoveList will list Read-Alikes.

And the last, is about an unhappily married man who gets trapped in an increasing series of outrageous bets with his sinister neighbour out of a crushing fear of being impolite. Apparently this story is supposed to reflect the desperation for connection that we all feel, but I had so many issues with it. Founded in 2015 by Emma Alice Johnson and Sam Richard, Weirdpunk Books initially focused on anthologies like The New Flesh: A Literary Tribute to David Cronenberg and Blood For You: A Literary Tribute to GG Allin.

The first two stories could both have easily been full length novels because there was so much to unpack, but instead we get these quick jabs to the gut and then nothing. So a friendship from out of nowhere takes shape between the two girls, and of course they become infatuated with each other, which is fine. Bottom line: I also wish I could say this will teach me to judge books by their covers, but it won't! Psychological horror combined with body horror can be bold, can be inclusive, and still be shocking as hell. Have absolutely zero input on the quality of the book itself but this is a hell of a cover/title combination pic. This collection also includes two other short stories: THE ENCHANTMENT and YOU’LL FIND IT’S LIKE THAT ALL OVER. I wish the words behind that picture had the same skin-crawling creepiness, the same deftness of skill, the same unforgettable quality. Things Have Gotten Worse has sold more than 20,000 copies, making it by far the most successful release to date for Weirdpunk Books, the Minneapolis-based DIY horror imprint that published it. One lonely woman sells a family heirloom to another, and the two dive into a whirlwind of toxic self-disclosure. It's particularly nice reading horror with queer characters that don't go too heavy on the queer suffering.

Cassandra Khaw's Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists. This is a story of a manipulator and how things can go when manipulating someone with the wrong state of mind. One things for certain, I will be keeping my eye on Eric Larocca but whether it be out of fear or admiration we'll never know. Once again, the characters were bland and unbelievable and the story simultaneously felt drawn out and underdeveloped. The Enchantment has a very powerful opening (reminds me of the suffocating dread of a Ari Aster film), and some beautifully depicted imagery, but it also meanders aimlessly (particularly during the middle), and never fully explores the intriguing spirituality inquiry it puts forward at the start. Overall I enjoyed them, but they were all very short--the first one is barely a novella, and the other two are short stories. Third story may have actually been the best in terms of being a cohesive whole, though it was clunky in a few spots. Horror and weird fiction both experiment with ambiguity; at their best they exist in a space between the text and reader, playing with the unknown to generate meaning.
