About this deal

As you might be able to guess by the cover, he inserts current-Lewis into a candid narrative about his teen life, including his coming out process, and realizing he was trans.

The daughter of modest restaurant owners, Kim was apolitical—she just wanted to make her parents proud and be worthy of her tuition expenses. For the American reader, expect a certain amount of unfamiliar British slang, but most can be picked out from context. Every story I've heard about trans guys before they've got to start transitioning really young and I always feel so jealous and overthink that what if it's too late for me. I think it is an excellent book for teenagers (and adults) who have or want to understand gender issues.

Tarinassa kuulee kirjailijan äänen, joka onkin tärkeää, koska tämä kirja kertoo hänen matkastaan Loisista Lewisiksi. Hell is not without a definite endearing humour, as bleak as the catalysts for that comedy often are. The creators smoothly and cleverly embed the historical context within which Takei’s family’s story takes place, allowing readers to simultaneously experience the daily humiliations that they suffered in the camps while providing readers with a broader understanding of the federal legislation, lawsuits, and actions which led to and maintained this injustice.I really connect with this book and would really recommend to anyone especially other trans guys like me who's had a similar experience. The kinetic manhwa drawing style skillfully captures the personal and political history of this eye-opening memoir. I'm so glad he made this because it was so relatable and a reminder that I'm not alone even when I think I am. Packed with great illustrations, humour, empathy, and valuable information, I would definitely recommend Welcome to St Hell to all readers (though it does have some slightly adult content and so is probably not suitable for anyone under 13).

The heroes who fought against this and provided support to and within the Japanese American community, such as Fred Korematsu, the 442nd Regiment, Herbert Nicholson, and the ACLU’s Wayne Collins, are also highlighted, but the focus always remains on the many sacrifices that Takei’s parents made to ensure the safety and survival of their family while shielding their children from knowing the depths of the hatred they faced and danger they were in. One full-page diagram annotates her body, describing her breasts as “fatty lumps that need to be gone”, her “hips from hell” and “my imaginary willy”. Also the framework was just kind of fun, having the future and past versions of the narrator interacting. Not all trans or LGBTQIA+ kids have support from their biological family, but families come in all shapes and sizes, whether biological or chosen.

He is also a co-organiser of the annual UK Small Press Day and has been a judge or committee member for the Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition, the British Comic Awards and the SICBA Awards. But there were also some fun moments that had a lot of early to mid-2000s nostalgia for alternative, pop punk, and emo music and other parts of pop culture. The rendering of the dialect felt kind of embarrassing to me and I wasn't crazy about the art, but it was still worth the read.

When presented with the option of pants or a skirt for his uniform upon beginning high school, past-Lewis chooses the skirt to circumvent potential bullying but, as fellow classmates and narrator Hancox insists, he “was a boy in a skirt. Parents have reacted with fury to a taxpayer-funded national library scheme for teenagers as young as 13 that promotes puberty blockers and transgender surgery. In its letter, it wrote: “The Trans Teen Misadventure book contains obscene adult imagery and gives vulnerable children the message that taking puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones is a normal part of growing up, rather than causing irreversible harm and possible infertility and the inability to have a normal sex life as an adult. The art and dialogue complement each other as they express the tension that Kim and her friends felt as they tried to balance school, family, and romance with surviving in a dangerous political environment.A line that made me laugh is right at the end when the nurse is about to administer a hormone shot and she asks, imagine a lovely Liverpudlian/Scouse accent here, "Are you one o' them transformers, luvvy? I have been privileged to be involved in one person's gender transition and I found this book reminiscent of our journey. Helens, and the dialogue and narration are littered with regional slang, some of which sets the scene, adding cultural flavor, and some of which becomes repetitive and distracting. Families have written complaint letters claiming the section “promotes self-harm” and has “safeguarding red flags”. And kids really will bully other kids for any reason, so every reader should be able to find empathy for Lewis in this graphic novel, regardless of their gender identity.
