About this deal

The distance from the top of the fireplace opening to the bottom side of the mantel is described as the clearance. Local building codes determine what the safe clearance is. Make sure the mantel is installed according to those codes to help protect it from wear. A company called Vlaze launched “aesthetically lovely” heat shields (see pic). VLAZE wall mounted heat shields are designed to be hung behind a wood burning stove creating a focal point that not only enhances the fireplace but allows the stove to be placed close to the wall behind. When installed the shield reduces the stoves distance to a combustible material by half and in the case of Charnwood appliances down to just 100mm. Direct heat from the fireplace will wear down the mantel over time and can cause it to become overheated—and in some cases, flammable. To protect the mantel from excessive fireplace heat, let’s look at two different methods. Heat Deflection The minimum distance that should be maintained between a TV and a fireplace to avoid heat damage is 24 inches. This distance may vary based on the size and heat output of your fireplace.

Note that joints in twin wall are, according to regs, supposed to be able to be inspected and a suitable inspection hatch fitted (30cm x 30cm minimum). One way of achieving this is to make your closure register plate removable in some form (even if removing it is a pain at least you have complied). There must also be an air gap between the shield and the combustible material of a minimum of 12mm (other wise the combustible material soon ends up the same temp as the shield). However, learning why your fireplace mantel getting hot and maintaining it regularly can protect it from regular wear & tear. Now, you may ask- how to protect fireplace mantel from heat and maintain it for increasing its shielding ability? This distance can be halved if you shield the combustible material. The shield must, of course, be non-combustible (do not use plasterboard as it is not A1 fire-rated and may gradually crumble).

If a mantelpiece uses stone as its construction material, wash it regularly to shield it against the stain. If you have enough budget, you can also go for a heat-resistant mantel. Using one, you don’t need to install a deflector or a hood. Therefore, follow the maintenance tips we provided to keep your mantelpiece clean and protect its shiny look. Protect a mantel from heat by using a device to redirect the heat. Those devices are deflectors and fireplace hoods. The best way to ensure the mantel is protected is to install it at the correct clearance. The clearance recommendation is typically right at 12 inches. You can enjoy all these benefits as long as your mantel remains in its shape and its frame stays in good condition. Over time, the heat from the fireplace damages the mantel’s finish and its frame. As a result, it starts losing its protection capacity.Maple is the best wood for a fireplace mantel as it can take a lot of pressure. How do I protect my TV from fireplace heat?
