About this deal

Ancient monuments date from earliest times to about ad 100, and archaeological periods within this time span are distinguished by the use of different symbols and colours on the map. An index to all sites is provided, with each monument named, given an National Grid reference number, and the relevant 1:50 000 scale Landranger sheet number so that sites may be exactly pinpointed.

Our maps are designed to last for years but if you are having a clear out, do your part for the planet and pop them in your local recycling bin. Otherwise, you're going to find that it's a great map, easy to read and inspiring you to travel to the less-known sites only the intrepid will see.I find the greyed out information still obtrusive, and the ancient site information is not as easilly visible as I might have liked. No cardholder information is ever passed un-encrypted and any messages sent to our servers from Sage Pay are signed using MD5 hashing to prevent tampering. The base map has altitude colouring to indicate the topography and shows the present day road network.

The time related colour coding is very useful, and for the uninitiated the information guides are useful. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The historical map and guide is complemented by a timeline that shows British events in relation to wider world history. Many panels describing important archaeological remains are accompanied by extracts from OS Landranger maps at 1:50,000 showing their exact location. Overall, the Ordnance Survey's first edition 1 inch map series is special for its comprehensive survey of Great Britain, its high level of accuracy, its visually striking design, and its wide range of uses. They're large, so not easy to open in the car but that's what lay-bys and English Heritage car parks are for! Symbols arranged according to the period (Palaeo/Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, Roman, and Medieval) and use (civil, defence, domestic, industrial, religious/ritual, and funerary/burial) show locations of the sites. Very good and informative map with a clear indexing of roman activities, roads, forts, villas hoard finds etc etc.

I just wish they would produce these maps on a smaller scale so they could fit in the little not so significant places but they still might be of interest. Low Resolution file size is approximately 1 MB, suitable for prints up to 8 x 10-inches and High Resolution file size is approximately 4MB, suitable for prints up to 11 x 14-inches.

Key sites of significant historical interest are highlighted using photographs, text, and thumbnail mapping from the OS Landranger map series. We're history buffs, we travel through the UK a lot and while we're on the road it's always interesting to us what we're passing. Available in quantities of 5, 10 or 20 with the option of a kraft greeting card box for gift giving and storage.
