Due to David Eggby's stylized, mostly soft-focus cinematography, contrast appears heavily subdued and controlled, which is intended for complementing the story with a bleak and somber atmosphere. Pretty much EVERY car explosion, every stunt, every flip of a vehicle was all done with real cars, real wirework, and real booms. Again, the classic dystopian thriller has never looked better on home video, and loyal fans will be more than happy with the results.

For the week of May 5th, Shout Factory is bringing a new edition of the classic actioner Mad Max to Blu-ray.Absolutely FANTASTIC Service, bought and paid for on Friday morning and arrived on Saturday morning! A lot of the violence in this movie is implied (including rape) and it works so much better as the imagination can be even worse than actually seeing it; there is some spectacular carnage here with exceptional stunts and the low budget gives it extra grit. I remember it being aggressive in theaters, but this is beyond amazing, as the Dolby Atmos track just tears apart your system with the ferocity of Immortan Joe himself.

Black level holds reasonable sway, mostly, the pig pen and underground has decent depth and shadows, but I wouldn’t say it’s pitch.HDR and WGC do give a depth to the colours, the richness of the sand, the vibrancy of Bartertown, with the lighting of the Thunderdome looking particularly pleasing. Even though this is an upscale, there is little to complain about, detail is keen and sharp on everything from tattered clothing to silver sprayed teeth, with landscape shots looking stunning. Years later George Miller has resurrected the franchise with Fury Road, a weird hybrid of remake, reboot, and sequel all in one. Fortified in the massive, armored truck the War Rig, they try to outrun the ruthless warlord and his henchmen in a deadly high-speed chase through the Wasteland.

And when the bikers brutalize Max’s best friend and family, they send him into a mad frenzy that leaves him with only one thing left in the world to live for—revenge! Bass is reasonable, it wont be waking any neighbours but it is significant enough to add impact to the track when needed. However, I went opening night and left with jaw hanging to the floor, and unfortunately it was not out of awe and amazement. Contains a bonus DVD disc ‘The Madness of Max’, behind-the-scenes making od the film that started it all.

The extras package for the whole set is a tad light, but it’s great to have The Madness of Max making of documentary (on DVD) and the Black and Chrome Blu-ray edition of Fury Road included. The classic actioner has never looked as good as it does in this native 4K transfer, showing well-defined lines in each muscle car and motorcycle, exposing every scratch, dent and bit of rust. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome whilst a step up from the Blu-ray in terms of image quality, in comparison to the rest of the discs in this set it is slightly lacking. With so much in its favor, 'Mad Max: Fury Road' already steals my vote for the best action movie, if not the most satisfying film, of the year.
