About this deal

Years after a mocroplastic mega storm killed much of the population, we meet Katie, surviving in an apartment with her son Harry, who has never known a world other than the current state it is in.

They meet several other survivors, some of whom are decent folks trying to live through the end times, and some who have more nefarious intentions. Sure, humanity did this to themselves, and maybe we should all change our ways before it’s too late. I will not tell you whether they find Jack, but I will tell you that Sarah Jackson manages to keep hope alive for the reader and in the end, that desperate spark of hope is rewarded. It’s journey of survival, and also an eventual physical journey that will make your heart pound and your pulse race. She won't teach her son anything about the "Before" times, and when she meets people who are nice to her, she's rude and acts like a spoiled brat.Jackson’s dystopian novel wrings the last drops of optimism from our climate-challenged world but manages to distill the very essence of hope in the process. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously.

Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. I wrote a much longer review but in doing so I chewed the material and realized there are plenty of issues. Apocalyptic outcomes are on the horizon, and so many speculative narratives in recent years have projected end-of-world scenarios tied to the calamity. Special thanks to Doubleday for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a review through NetGalley. Outside their protected bubble, Katie and Harry encounter an altered world, full of new dangers, other survivors--both friend and foe--and many surprises. She's creepily jealous and possessive of her son when an older grandmotherly woman offers to watch him for her and tries to prevent anyone from telling her kid anything about the world.
