About this deal

All of these methods would eliminate planarians from your tank but the one I prefer is creating my own Planaria trap. This dose had no affect upon my red cherry shrimp, small fish (rasbora) or the many Malaysian trumpet snails in my tank (including 1-2mm babies through to 20mm or so adults).

Another option is to set DIY snail traps or commercially available snail traps. You can easily remove them in the morning and watch it be covered in snails. We are seeing planarian flatworms ever more frequently in the hobby, due in no small part to the rise in popularity of shrimps. Drill a hole in the cap for the snails to get in. Depending on what kind of snails you are trying to get.

Basically there are only 2 ways to 100% eliminate hydra without breaking down tank and starting again: You see, these pests are master hitchhikers. They are tiny enough to hide and travel on a wide variety of objects. They often get added to fish tanks by way of live plants. Note: Do not do this frequently. One or two days a week will be enough. Do not crush too many snails at once (start from 1-2 snails). If you see that shrimp cannot eat them all in 1 day – this is overfeeding. I didn't make it a long term experiment to find the proper dose.. I just once did try out of curiousity a pinch fluke solve in a glass of water with planaria. It looked like it killed it about instantly.. In comparance in volumes it was rather a huge overdose. I have absolutely no knowledge about it also no idea if overdosing Prazi affects snails etc.Anyhow, set up your Planaria trap in the evening and wait until the next morning. If you don’t see many worms in the bottle, wait a total of 24 hours. Note: Never add water from the bag into the tank. Do acclamation the right way. You can read my article about it here. 1. Quarantine Do you find yourself dealing with a dreaded planaria infestation? Congratulations: You’re a true aquarist! I've been fighting hydra in my nano shrimp tank for the last month or two, and finally have succeeded in eliminating them - hooray! So thought I'd post what I tried / failed / succeeded with in case it helps others....

Then the Planaria start searching for a soft spot to enter the shrimp’s body. When they find their way into the shrimp, they will eat it alive. That is a very sad story for all shrimp breeders. Ways to Getting Rid of Planaria It’s possible that your kuhli loach has just damaged his skin and you’re seeing some localized infection Unfortunately, it can be lethal for your snails. That is why, if your snails form part of your healthy shrimp eco-system you must be very careful. Remember that if you do have snails it will cause an ammonia spike when they die. Which is likely to kill more shrimp than the planaria themselves. The same goes for a large number of planaria. If you have a lot and they die they will also cause an ammonia spike. According to Esha, I quote their reply, “eSHa Gastropex is shrimp safe but be careful with to many dead snails. Shrimp eat a lot of dead waste and the snails contain eSHa Gastropex. If the shrimps then eat it, it is not so good for them. So try to remove as much snails before, during and after treatment and if you see any changes in behavior stop treatment and do a large water change. Please do not use any water conditioners in your tank, if you did, do a large water change before treatment. Water conditioners can influence the product. Yes, eSHa Gastropex contains Copper”. 7. Electricity vs Snails I was already dosing Seachem Excel at the recommended dosage. Diluted in the tank water this had no effect on hydra, but spot treating did kill any hydra I directly hit with undiluted Excel. The problem is that the daily dose for my tank is about 1ml and that doesn't allow you to hit many hydra per day. I obviously didn't want to dose higher because of the shrimp, and actually I have now stopped using Excel at all in this tank because it didn't seem to do much to help my Christmas moss, and I've read that whilst long-term daily dosing might not be dangerous to shrimp, it might also not be optimal. So Excel is not useful really it eliminating hydra. There are also the Parasphaerichthys which sometimes trade as Burmese "chocolate gouramis" - I've not managed to source any of these
